What people, including McGowan, appear to be concerned about is the potential harm caused by drunks to non-drinkers (ie, families). My point is that there are existing protections in place over any licence.

If there’s a drunk person causing problems in the stadium, then the stadium management has failed: either by letting a drunk person in, serving a drunk person, or not dealing with a drunk person if they have somehow circumvented protections put in place (with a hip flask, for example). Unless you consider people are capable of getting drunk off one standard drink, the difference between serving a mid-strength and regular beer in this scenario is negligible other than in flavour and personal choice.

The current arrangement at Subi allows for parts of the stadium to sell full-strength beer, on the basis that those sections have the adequate controls in place (ie, doormen at the BW room, more attentive service staff in the boxes). I’d suggest that’s a sensible approach, and one that could be expanded to other parts of the stadium.

But when confronted with the reality that serving full-strength alcohol doesn’t cause problems in some areas, rather than interrogate what those controls are, the Premier has decided to grandstand on class. I’m normally all for that, but not when the result is consigning me to Carlton Mid, without the respite of at least a Fat Yak at halftime.

It’s pretty poor.

Just open members' bars that sell full-strength. If someone is causing problems, suspend their membership.

And, for the record, CUB, in addition to Carlton Draft, sell SABMiller and Anheuser-Busch beers (ie, half the beers in the world).

You've concocted this fantasy where you'll be sampling from one of the many delightful beers the world has to offer, in charming company while the experienced bar staff keep an eye on the less sophisticated amongst the crowd, politely ushering those who've indulged a tad too much to the nearest soft drink dispensary so they can stay safe but still hydrated. Then you'll make an hilarious quip about the opposition gentleman to your left, he'll laugh and toast your quick wit and then everyone will join in with a raucous laugh, taking a moment to appreciate the subtle flavours of their boutique beer from Southern Latvia, before returning their attention to the spectacle in front of them.

It might be like that where you sit but the reality is they're flogging generic beer in a plastic cup. You've got huge numbers of people, some of whom have confused a live event with the pub, a huge venue and a lot of inexperienced staff doing a difficult job. So they have to come up with a plan to manage the situation which may include things such as limiting how much alcohol people can get into their system during the 3 hour event.

embee is on it
so before the game that tavern will be packed all strengths and types of grog availiable, are they technically on stadium grounds?
if so then they should only serve mid as well.
like that will happen, they would not only go broke but have no customers ,unless the food is good.
a lot of supporters go to the subi and the vic, they are ceratinly fired up by the time they leave,i dont recall unsavoury behavior etc at the ground maybe caused from those patrons.
i only drink bourbon at the game i would not drink carlton crap full or mid, same goes to vic bitter ,if that is a bitter i will eat someone's hat.
emu bitter is the best and a true bitter.

How is drinking decent beers and employing competent staff a fantasy Shane? Western Bulldogs supporters get that benefit at Docklands every game. Collingwood fans at every day game at the MCG.

Do you think Freo supporters are worse than that mob, or just Western Australians in general?

On a 3 hour working week.

I heard on the news tonight that people in Perth are getting sick because they're not cooking their eggs enough.

When you comment about who should be able to do what where, just imagine a city with so people who don't cook their eggs enough that the health department is forced to put out a warning.

Why do you think they had to remove the turnstiles.

Like everything else, Melbournians will claim they weren't cooking their eggs enough before it was cool.

I might be going out on a limb here but asking people to drink responsibly in a town where they can't even manage driving on multi lane roads with any awareness is asking too much.

Why have a world class (supposedly) stadium that ends up with third-world nanny grog? Stupid. It's like building a big wide freeway and putting a 15k/hr speed limit on it.

We have a 100kph limit on our freeway and most Perth folks are happy to do 80 anyway so my guess is if we serve full strength beer some of the crowd will add lemonade and have a shandy instead.

WA’s peak hospitality group, the Australian Hotels Association, says Mr McGowan’s suggestion is “silly”.

“We’d look silly having restrictions with corporate boxes, particularly when people have travelled from interstate for four or five hours from the other side of the country to be treated like children.”

I wonder if it's official AHA policy to only serve children mid-strength beer or just a guideline.
