Maybe my seats at the footy are too expensive. I see drunk people there, but they're not being offensive.

The worst (and pretty isolated) behaviour has come from people who aren't drunk, but can't see anything wrong with swearing around kids, swearing and threatening people who point it out, believing they're self entitled to be a nob wherever they are.

McGowan should just have an allocated 'nobs and full strength beer section', so he and Karl O'C can cage all their eggs in one basket.

Maybe McGowan remembers the brawls at State of Origin footy, when supporters would hit the "Subi" and the "Vic" before the game to have a couple in remembrance of whichever relly had "passed away" just before that years S of O, then go to the game and cause havoc, or maybe the "Wacca" the day a heap of poms got drunk, and thought it would be fun to pretend they were soccer fans.

TM, mid-strength at the game doesn't stop people going to the pub first, as per your decades-old example.

What hasn't been grasped is that mid-strength is to beer as a Subi burger is to food. People who like beer, as far as I can tell, only buy mid-strength for Shane's beer-in-hand example. So McGowan's edict is akin to saying only Subi-burgers will be available at the game.

At least at Subi you can pop down to the Billy Walker room and taste actual beer. Under McGowan's plan that would be gone too. So he's actually taken the position backwards. Also at Subi there were pubs in walking distance before or after the game.

Plus, I'm not sure who covers the lost revenues from corporate boxes - but my guess is it's not McGowan. The stadium operators will make sure they get their pound of flesh. I'd prefer they get it from the people who can best afford it.

At least give us a choice of mid strength beers. Carlton Mid is just wrong.

Can’t we just set up some full strength beer cages up around the ground : )

People for whom it really matters to be drunk at the game will find a way. A small but entirely contained subset of this group consists of all the troublemakers for whose troublemaking drink is a factor.

This will achieve nothing, and will annoy those who just want a couple of decent beers. For someone like me, who quite likes more than just a couple but never causes trouble for anyone, it's possibly a money-saver. Beer's cheaper at the casino.

In 21 years I've twice seen offensive drunken behaviour at Subi. Once from a Carlton supporter, once from a Collingwood supporter. Both times before the game had even started. I suspect this means its possible somehow to initiate drunkenness outside the ground. Needs investigating. Solution is clear. Just get serious and ban opposition supporters from games. I drink wine at the footy anyhow because it cultivates an air of sophistication and stops me peeing myself during quarters.

I admit perhaps my perceptions have also been shaped by a lack of incident over my 20-odd years of attending Freo games. I remember a boozed Geelong fan being dragged out of the stadium once (I suspect he also had a few under his belt before he arrived), and an Eagles fan once at a Derby causing a bit of a raucous, but you put any crowd of 30,000 in a confined space and an incident every decade or so would be a decent result.

I have also seen very few incidents at the Wildcats where games are played almost exclusively on Friday night after people have had a few post-work drinks (and where I also have season tickets) and the Force, both of which sell full strength beer.

I must admit, I didn't think Freo fans were of worse character than fans of other sporting teams in Perth, but I guess if people are worried about a tide of drunken yobbos among the Freo members around them, then I'm wrong about that.

Bit of a shame really.

I believe it wont make much difference if they are selling full or mid strength beer, the trouble makers will just be more likely to pre load if there is only mid strength available in my opinion.
Over the years I haven't noticed much alcohol fuelled trouble at Subi and any time I have it has been at Friday night games, which I believe is due to a lot of people kicking on to the footy after the after work Friday arvo drinks hence they are usually tanked by the time they get there.

If we have to have mid strength I agree with Freakster at least give us a few choices not just Carlton Mid.
I'm not really a light beer drinker so not sure what's out there but something like a Little Creatures Rogers or Peroni Leggera (Mid) etc would have to be better than that watery Carlton Mid they serve up at Subi.

I'm just advocating for personal responsibility. I like a beer at the game. I like to go down to the bars where they sell something half decent.

I don't believe you can legislate for poor behaviour of a minority. I don't think you should have to. Our pollies think otherwise, they do it all the time, and then wonder why problems aren't fixed. You can't fix stupid.

I'm not averse to drinking mid, I like it if the product's good. Carlton Mid isn't, but they pay big to be the only thing on tap. The stadium planned to have a microbrewery onsite, which would be nice, but will probably be limited for product by this ban.

I'm all for personal responsibility, but you don't even need to go that far. We've got pretty clear liquor licensing laws in our state. It is an offence to sell or supply alcohol to a drunken person, a breach of which could land a manager with a $10,000 fine, and lead to a cancellation of a licence.

Entry into licensed premises may be refused for reasons such as drunkenness or disorderly behaviour.

Just hold the stadium management company (or licensed venues inside) accountable to complying with the existing law, rather than allowing politicians and police commissioners to grandstand on the issue.

Cant see why this is so difficult. Break the stadium into zones.Family areas with no alcohol. Midstrength alcohol areas. And areas where full-strength is allowed.Would help Freo and West Coast in selling there membership packages.
What they do in the corporate boxes should be the concern of the box holder not the Premier. They pay top $ for the privlege of leasing the box.

There is a 2500 patron capacity pub being built right next to the new stadium ...the Camfield

They should be good for pre-loaders

There's no existing law, Morgan. They're putting in submissions to Liquor Commission who will be working out the details of the license.

I would imagine you're welcome to write them a passionate submission explaining how you want to be able to drink Carlton Draught instead of Carlton Mid.
