Still flabbergasted how Bradley could kick this goal and get a GOTY nomination and miss that sitter dead in front in the last quarter...talk about a Mayne-level momentum crusher...

Interesting question: if you had to decide who had the better season between B Hill so far this year, or D Pearce (the bloke he might have squeezed out of the team) last year, it would be a no-brainer right?

Statistically they are very similar. Clicky

I reckon B Hill helps stretch the defence, which wouldn't be captured by stats, but he is statistically a worse kick (in both efficiency and clangers) and only tackles half as much. Interestingly D Pearce averaged more clearances from 50 and inside 50s than B Hill, which would suggest D Pearce also got on his bike. B Hill hits the scoreboard a little more though.

B Hill also possesses D Pearce's rare skill of demonstrating in the same game that he is capable of doing the impossible and incapable of doing the simple.

That's too simplified an approach.

Freo - as do other teams if they can orchestrate the game on their terms and exactly as they like it to be - have players they prefer to kick-in from points, be the 'generals' / quarter-backs off half-back flank and to deliver the ball inside 50.

If you're an opposition coach you do NOT want Stephen Hill delivering the ball for Freo. (Which is why him improving his inside game has been such a plus but that's a whole other topic).

So amongst the mayhem and systems the teams opposition clubs use is to try and shut down or limit Stephen Hill before they shutdown others.

Which is why Pearce's high inside 50s or rebound numbers have always been a furphy .... if I was coaching against us .... I'd want Freo kicking it to him as they come out of their backline and I'd be loving it if he was the one kicking it inside 50 to the Freo fwds as well.

I'd coach to leave him as the outlet player for Freo.

So, the question or analysis isn't a comparison between Danyle and Bradley's stats, the actual question is does Brad Hill pose a more attacking threat (do opposition coaches and players need to fear him and put more time in to shutting him down) than Danyle?

I reckon the answer is yes (in terms of being a link player and hitting the scoreboard).

Of course it's simplified, and I agree that BH been more damaging than DP; but D Pearce was constantly criticised for his kicking on this board, and on the evidence available - both statistically and in person - B Hill is no better than D Pearce in that regard. In fact, you could even say the stats flatter Hill because he is constantly out in space, whereas D Pearce was winning the hard ball and often trying to execute off one step.

People have expressed surprise that B Hill missed a sitter. I don't think it's surprising at all.

Don't know how we compare to other teams with regards to kicking skills, but it would appear that it's not that great,

Taking that into consideration and without any stats who would you say are the best ball users in our side. I'd go for Mundy, S Hill, Weller and Son Son. Probably Crozier also.

Great post 391
I was at thunder game on Sat (as usual) and stats would say Pearce & Sheridan had a great games but effectiveness and how they won kicks is questionable ie sheridan was coming off the back of the centre square with no one on him(even subi happy to concede that kick)
For a real contest and promotion to the first`s look no further than Deluca & Nyhuis

Brad Hill is constantly out in space because he runs a shedload of miles to gain it and probably is prone to being a bit too rooted to always execute his skills perfectly.

I do agree with you Morgan that many are merciless in their assessment of D.Pearce, I'd still have B.Hill quite a few notches above him, in both output and criticality and explainability of stuff ups.

Also need to keep in mind, Pearce was a seasoned verteran well-used to the team he was playing in, while Hill is just coming into his prime and adjusting to a new system and team mates.

Having said all that...I have a sneaky suspicion that B.Hill missing that goal let most of the air out of the tyres after a long period of having the Pies under the pump but not capitalising and if he'd kicked it we would've probably managed to keep it going and gotten over the line.

Brad Hill is also, along with Sutcliffe the worst tackler at Freo imo. Waiting for Roly to sort that out but it hasnt happened yet.

As you alluded to in another thread Rhufus, Freo actually is a low (quantity) tackling side and has been so for a number of years. I've been assuming this was a way of reducing fatigue.

Danyle being unfairly maligned at times and Hill, B. being a 'better' option for the current 22 not the same thing and both are true.

So my next query is with ...

- Dawson gone
- Ibbo gone
- Danyle gone
- Sheridan gone ...

Who is your next 'escaped goat' --- Sutcliffe a perennial favourite, Hill off a long and gut busting run, Kersten whose new guy currency is wearing out, or Taberner?

The AFL list is one of the most highly controlled markets around and as such you invariable have to have blokes on your list who aren't proficient at all aspects of the game. If we want to switch from Mirco to Macro issues. I reckon as a club we have always struggled through coaching and development to turn average footballers in to good ones, and good footballers in to great ones.
