TOPIC: Give 'Em A Rest?

I'm not too sure about this resting players mid-season theory. I'm of the opinion that this is what the bye is for. I do understand that guys like Sandi and Johnno and maybe Mundy should not be played if not fully fit or rested before finals if we make it, but as for the rest of the team, I don't get it.
Sure you don't risk players who aren't fit but isn't tbis what they do all this pre-season work for? Yes we had a hard slog in the rain last week but that's football. It's an outdoor sport, except for one venue, and all sides have to deal with it. Surely you adjust your training the week after a game like that and reboot, recalculate, reconsider or any other of those re words that Roly likes to use.

Who has been rested? I presumed Sandi was rested last week but I was wrong about that one.

I know its contentious Corporal...and not many people seem to like it. But I'm just putting it out there...
There is a fatigued team running around out there. Is it Old legs?, young legs? injuries we don't know about? Lack of preparation? Over preparation? ...who knows??
I certainly don't!
But what I can see is tiredness and fatigue, and a perfect opportunity to give some blokes a 2 week mid season break.
Yes, they are professionals, yes, we aren't even half way through yet. Understand all those very valid points.

But its Brisbane in Brisbane, and its the week before our bye, in a season where we really shouldn't have very high expectations of where we are going to get to...

Just putting it out there - ....and getting hammered about it for doing so !! :)

BUT, IN NO WAY am I advocating for bringing "The Fist" back in!! Want to be clear on that!! That would be a step too far!!

You look fatigued when your opponents chip it around with precision. Since we don't go man on man, they just pass to a guy who is somewhere between 5m and 25m clear of his opponent, and we all have to run to our new positions. Only one of them has to run - the guy who's getting the ball next. But all of us have to run. So we get tired.

I thought we had two objectives this season:

i. Improve the list by blooding younger players, and making a call on youngish blokes on the fringes; and

ii. See if we could sneak into the 8 and give ourselves a puncher's chance of winning a flag.

For mine, both those objectives are served by occasionally rotating older players out of the side to make way for some young blokes, so long as you rotate out for games you won't win, and focus on the winnable games for the older blokes.

We were never going to trouble Adelaide, but with fresh legs we could have run over Collingwood.

Couldn't agree more Morgan, we simply have to win against the Lions this week, if some of our older statesmen or youngsters are still looking a bit tired after the week off then rest them for the cats game after the bye as well. We are a 30% at best chance of winning that one with our best 22 on the field.

Definitely not hammering you Cletus. I was interested in what others thought. The older players I did say I could see the point at some stage, but I can only think of the two or three I mentioned that fitted that category.
I also think we're in that difficult position of being a chance to make finals so resting too many players could jeopodise that , but on the other hand we would like to probably see some of the following by the end of the year in Cox, Darcy, Logue, Deluca.

All good Corporal. Never thought I was being hammered by you.. :)

I just reckon we gotta keep looking at the young blokes, take the opportunity to give the battle weary a rest, and if we have to give some has-been's a charity game to achieve that, then this is the perfect weekend.

Surely they won't play Sandy this week? No need to make our most crucial player suffer the longest road trip. Send young Darcy across and give him a go....

I've been contentious enough, (...and the following goes against everything I believe in!!...) but I'm not absolutely certain we should chase finals this year?, and I'm concerned there is a fair bit of chatter about the F word at this half way point. Hurts me to say it, but we really need another high end draft pick...and we need to 'tank it" (...hopefully a big tall brute can ruck, or at the very least is a genuine ridgey-didge CHF or CHB). That would really complete the restump, rebuild, rewire or what ever it is we are doing. So I say tank tank tank!! and rest a few next week!

Maybe, - considering the last 2 games - maybe we are already doing that !??!

We don't have any need to tank it, we are just not that good at the moment. Over the year Collingwood could very easily have won more games than they have and we could very easily have lost more. Not surprised of the few games I have watched of Collingwood this year thought they have showed better form, as indicated by their percentage.
Would like to see improvement in our game style and ability to maintain possesion of the footy and therefore move the ball effectively. Players introduced that are able to make decisions and execute under pressure with speed to burst, we still have too many players one paced and below AFL standard. All players need to play with the same desire to win the footy as Neale, Blakely and Fyfe.
There needs to be a shift in how we treat the opposition when they are in possesion of the footy, we need to lay legitimate hard tackles, implied pressure through corralling no longer cuts the mustard. Grey and Weller set the standard here.
