Mentioned earlier, we got slaughtered in the midfield. S. Hill is struggling since coming back. Fyfe, Mundy and Blakely doing their best. That's where it's won and lost. The supply to our fwd line was wayward. We've got the potency needed to score though when Ballas and the 2 Harleys are up and about, will it be even more potent. All means nothing if we don't get quantity and quality supply.

Nobody had the run or pace to compete today, which was similar to the first two games of the season. Constantly chasing, but without much intent. Ross called it poor positioning in his presser, but it looked like inability to keep up to me, combined with slow reaction. I dunno. How easy is a 4 year rebuild if you start playing finals after 1-2 years and therefore don't get high draft picks?

Hard to run with intent when your team mates have the inability to hit targets , not fumble, use wrong options and lack tall men to muscle around the packs.
Though Mundy , Fyfe and Neale are slow.
Very sad to see Ethan Hughes play today. Was really hoping he would come on , but his last couple of games he has made some astonishing mistakes with the ball.
Came of the rookie list and is still early on in his career, but unfortunately not sure RL and his co horts are going to be able to eradicate his poor ball use.

Don't discount the heavy legs from the last 2 games in the wet, S Hill in particular looked like he was running in mud. I would bet the training load did not lighten off last week, and it showed.

Your midfield is always going to be chasing, when they are not rewarded for catching the opposition.

How can your forwards score when they have the ball taken off them when they do mark (Walters). We see opposition backmen do this to our forwards all the time with no free, and then that gets called. The headlock put on the Freo playeyr in the Pies goalsquare by Elliott is another example, think it led indirectly to a goal.

When you are not getting paid frees that the opposition ARE getting; ie holding the ball and illegal disposal (6 or 7 to 1 by my count, even though the tackles are 33 to 29, when the first 4, in the first, and in the second quarter 5 frees have gone to the Pies to give them a free ride, things are going to be a little bit tougher.

The reason why Freo are rushing their disposals is that they know they will be free kicked against if a half tackle is laid, while the opposition have an eternity to dispose of the ball, or get a ball up if they hold it in.

Has Sam Collins got malaria ? He is a good mark , he can kick , he is not slow and he can read the play well .

He has a strong body and can hold his ground don't we need some one like that ?

Collins is a key position backman so he's not about to get a game before Johnno or Hamling. Would be interesting to see if they could try he or Cox in the forward line at Peel.

I thought we looked a bit tired today. We've been running over the top of teams a bit this season, but in the last quarter both teams looked stuffed.

But maybe I was just looking evidence to support my view that we should have rested players against Adelaide.

I thought everyone had a rest in Adelaide?

But on the serious side, Treloar was amazing in the midfield. Gets the ball, gets tackled, but somehow gets a boot to it, and it goes to a team mate. It didn't help that when he did just throw it there was usually no whistle.

When Richmond ended our winning run in 2015, they played just like the Pies yesterday. Just keep possession and don't care about territory one bit. Just keep moving it around until a genuine opening presents. Since we refuse to go man on man, it works for them.

Yes RM I think Roly made a comment at his presser on the workload he has been pushing the players through.

RogerRocks I agree, being at the game the two most obvious flaws besides all the inept fumbling etc was the refusal of the defenders to once again to stand near their players and for the midfielders to cover the outside contests.
Time and again we get sucked in ball watching whilst Treloar and Co sneak outside and receive a handball. Just like that Richmond game you mentioned.
Spurr and his partners in crime would consistently give Elliot 15 m and then routinely watch as they kicked it to him and he fails to get there in time to spoil or tackle.
Where are we on the tackle count this year, it would have to be close to last as we just never man up and are always playing a failed zone. Drives me nuts.

Coached properly, Collingwood should be able to beat pretty much any other side. Pendlebury, De Goey, Scharenberg, Hoskin-Elliot were all top five draft picks, Moore went at 9, Sidebottom, Adams and Grundy went 11, 13 and 18 respectively. Added to that, Adam Treloar and Jamie Elliot were taken out of the draft before anyone else had a shot at them.

Experience is important, but that is a lot of top-end talent to have on the field. It is a joke that they have lost six matches already.

Agree Mike. Massive underachievers with the midfield they have and class around the ground. It would be interesting to see a clubs best team and 'cost' in draft positions. For example I presume gws best team would have the lowest score because most of their players were taken early in drafts.

Good post Mike, thats a really interesting point. Could be Pies are underperforming. Other way to look at it, we could actually be overperforming if we compared our draft pick ratings to Collingwoods. I doubt an analysis of our list would have such a raft of top picks within it.
