TOPIC: Key Forwards

Eventually
Think Tabs and Griffo can go back to the WAFL for a break, hopefully Tabs can get some form back but Griffo is just not worth a spot now. I would bring big Darcy in to take Tabs spot and hopefully Sandi will be back for Griff.

Yeti, no-one wants Tabs to "come off" more than I, but I'm afraid I'm getting frustrated by seeing the same pattern play out again and again. This time round hes had several weeks at Peel "improving his game and consistency'.

And he needed this - and probably more time - so that he could re-enter AFL footy supremely confident in his game. Most importantly, he needed to rectify his 'flatspots' - or ability to impose himself on a game when things werent going his way.
All Throughout his extended Peel stay, we heard about how he should be playing 1's, and how he's the best contested mark, and how he's been a bit hard done by by being in, out, in out....etc etc.

What I've seen today, ive seen before. No physical presence, dropping sitters at crucial times (ie the first 5 minutes of last quarter, and a general lack of contest/awareness. It was like the boy was half asleep at times!!

Now, by no means was he responsible for todays loss. Everyone seemed to be on a bit of a 'downer' today....I personally think the bye can't come soon enough. There are some tired young - and old - bodies out there.

But I'm frustrated with Tabs. He had a shocker today, and effort was seriously lacking. We've been here before. He'll get dropped back to Peel, he'll probably put in a notable performance or two in the below par WAFL comp, and the Tab supporters will want him back in again. And we'll be told how good his contested marking is....again.

But the simple facts remain for me at this point. When he goes missing - he goes missing! He may take some marks, but he drops some absolute sitters - generally at match crucial times. (Unfortunately those stats arent recorded...) And he just doesn't seem to be able to 'get himself into the game' when things are flat, nor does he seem to be able to put back to back games together.

I expected more from him this time round, and I'm disappointed. In my mind, he is an extremely pivotable player for us. If he can be fabricated into a 197 cm lead up, strong marking, straight kicking forward, he is obviously bloody valuable.

But, at the moment the Ox is far too slow and this Earth is losing patience......

Darcy in for Griff. Keep Tabs, he's shown form this year at least and plays well against Brisbane. Structurally he adds to the team but he needs to put some work in on his marking this week. He needs to look at his positioning as well even if that means ignoring Roly's lack of structure and go back to presenting himself.

Sutcliffe should be in the gun before anybody, including Griffin. He's been awful all year and shown no inclination to improve.

Ryan can stay, he's already shown more than Ibbo.

Now about Fyfe, Mundy and SonSon. 3 deadset guns who played below WAFL standard for a few weeks now.

Roly should be taking a good hard look at himself amongst all this. Be nice to actyually go out there next week with a game plan and a structure. Auskick just isn't cutting it out there

Cletus,

Where you are missing the point still is Tabs did all those things you suggested.

In days gone by he made numerous leads that were generally ignored and then git dropped because he never kicked a bagful. He was no worse today than McCarthy or Kersten, yet he draws the ire of so many...mainly because he's a designated whipping boy thanks to Roly.

Structurally he backs up our ruck leaving Johnno free to organise the backs. Going back to Johnno as backup ruck costs us too much.

Yes he was poor today...along with 95% of his team mates but having 3 mobile talls will offer more against Brisbane than 2 talls and no Johnson in the backline

Agree with everything you said Yeti, except the payout on Walters. He has been in our top three players over the year so far, and would be first or second name to go on the whiteboard.

He has indeed RM....over the year.

Over the last 3 weeks he's been missing in action...not that I suggested dropping anybody in our midfield but none of them can claim doing a great job recently

He was one of our better players today, was a bit down last week, but besides that he has been doing the job. If he got the frees that eagles, cats pies and others got for high tackles, Freo would have won at least 2 more games this year.

I'd be inclined to go back to two talls minus Tabs.

I admire the way you stick by Tabs, Yeti but for me he is 'one of those players Leigh Matthews described in what you see is what you get after 50 games. Same as Sutcliffe and Sheridan.
If we're looking at a third tall and back up ruckman I'm for giving Hodor a go. He's a better ruckman and has showed he can kick goals as well, something our other ruckmen don't do.

Don't get me wrong....Kersten was MIA today...and that is probably more disapointing! I think its defintely the case that the team is limping towards a spell....

I think your point about coaching structure and lack there off, is a point well made Yeti. Thought Roly was extremely out coached today.

I'd be advocating some fresh legs next week. We can't afford a loss, but maybe we can scrape through with a few fresh / expendable legs against brisbane and give a few blokes a 2week rest. But even if we suffer a loss, I would have said we are probably well above our win/loss expectation.

Keep Tabs in, but by geez make it clear to him to 'get involved', and one in his position should be 'playing for his footballing life'.

Give Sandy a 4 week rest, and yes bring in Hodor for a run. Griffens time is up, should be a last resort only. Offers nothing.

Fifi is not right, spell him. Unfortunately we might have to go a step back, in order to go forward.
Bring in the Sheridens, Pearces, and Subans for a run, give Logue another game...maybe see how Brennan Cox goes? Ibbot can come back in as well.
This would give at least 5 blokes a 2 week spell, and might I suggest Fyfe , Munday, S. hill, and , dare I say it, Lachy Neale. All look a bit tired/not right. Langdon wasnt right, and maybe hughes could have a rest. Even Brad Hill looks a bit jaded.
An opportunity presents, and maybe - despite the risk of a loss - it might be one to take.

Haven't checked stats but my initial reaction would be that Taberner offered more than both Kersten and McCarthy today. I don't know what the problem is but seems to simple to just blame one forward. We have struggled to score for years with forwards that have included Pavlich, Mayne, Ballantyne, McCarthy, Kersten, Walters, Taberner.
Ball use, turnovers, being second to the footy, corralling as opposed to tackling (our tackle numbers are quite low I think) seem to play a big part.
Our ball movement has improved this year and there are signs of how we want to play. We need to add more speed and skill. Certain players will fall by the wayside.

Taberner just needs to relax more going for marks and he'd have had least have a few more shots on goal today. He dropped some sitters out there (largely non-contested), which aint so bad in the broader scheme of things, as he's shown a reasonable knack to clunk 'em on the odd occasion previously and at least is showing some nous for getting good positioning.

From my position near the goals today I saw Tabs do something bizarre at least twice: go for a contested mark, win that contested mark but then push it down for crumbers. And that was when there were several opposition players at the contest, with many more around. As a tall forward, take the mark and goal, Tabs!! It's been a while now, read the play. Frustrating to watch when you know he could have had the mark. Footy smarts....

Hi Cletus. I find that normally a long-ish post like your previous one would have got a few "You Beauts"...
