TOPIC: Key Forwards

What you are saying mushroom, is that there is no "process", and you are dead right! Even when we win, its not because we have a superior game plan, its simply because of greater effort, and perhaps some luck.
Headline from RoLys presser is that he reckons we lacked effort. Wanted greater effort from the players.

Well how about a bloody game plan RoLy??

We are in and about the 8. Can anyone honestly put their hand on heart and say we have a gameplan that can win finals???

Everyone is blaming the mids for getting towelled up and not giving the forward line the delivery they need, and yes, the mids are where it starts. But it helps them a whole lot, if there are forwards who want the ball, and I didnt see that from Kersten or Tabs on the weekend.
Mcarthy is still finding his feet and is at least crashing packs occasionally, but, seems to have a good dose of "Ablett-itis". Thinks he can get a goal from anywher on the ground.
Not even Purple Jesus could do what Cam reckons he can do....! Now, maybe thats a good attribute for a forward to have - but it does the tread a fine line of selfishness and hungryness....

Who was our forward coach in 2015 when we were blitzing teams in the first half of our games? That was probably the last time that there was some semblance of a system moving into our forward line..

I've got an idea - Why don't we win the ball first in the centre and then kick it to our forwards who are in around our forward fifty leading into space?
Works better than our forwards running up to the half back line all game like they have been doing the last 3 weeks.
Another genius idea is to play Mundy as a midfielder and not a half forward flank. Am I the only bloke to notice that he is the new Barlow? Play him in the midfield, that is what he does. If he is banged up then don't play him.

I'm starting to think Johnno forward.

Its a good thought Blockerhall, but it would mean we'd have to find another tall big bloke to play as a defender. And thats where it fails because theres no way we could bring in Sam Collins because he's RoLy's new SCOS.....

When we win the centre clearance and get it forward, it looks good when our forwards are allowed a run at the ball. Being held or shepherded out of the contest makes it difficult to get the 2 meters of space needed to take the mark. Before you howl me down, think back to the reversed free a couple of weeks ago in our forward line. The Freo player was being held for some time without getting a free. The whistle only went and the ball was taken off Walters ( I think) when the Freo player attempted to break the hold.

It is difficult to play to a game plan when there are 2 sets of rules in operation. Think about the throws and holding the ball variations in interpretation between Freo, and our opponents for most games this year. Most sides know they can get away with these infractions, so play to them and use them as a tactic.

Whilst our forward line hasn't been kicking scores and has been missing marks. I don't think they are the issue. They are a symptom of things happening up the ground.

The issue as I can see it can be traced to 3 main things:

1. Our tackling is very poor. We see more broken tackles than made tackles. And its not just the young guys, so you can't say they aren't battle hardened. Its senior players. Is that effort or technique. Plus there seemed to be a lot of corralling. So we're not even getting close enough to tackle or just holding back. Thats effort.

2. As soon as Sandi goes out of the team our vaunted midfield can't consistently make a clearance. When we win we win the clearances. When we don't (like the last 2 weeks with Griff) we don't win. We have patches when we get on top but not consistently enough. I can't see any reason to play Griff any longer. Seriously we are in a rebuild any hope of playing finals is pretty forlorn. We should be developing the next round of players not trying to get 8th spot with vets players taking up valuable game time that could be going to youngsters. Bring Darcy in, if Sandi is out.

3. Our rebound from the backline is atrocious, this is our biggest issue at the moment. We get locked in the backline for minutes at a time, just hoping the opposition doesn't eventually kick straight. I put this down to having players with poor disposal, a lack of forwards coming up the ground and taking a mark and slow play with terrible switches that take eons to get across the ground (because our players can't kick accurately over 30m). We need to be playing youngsters here and figuring out who to move on and who to keep. A line should be put through Sutcliffe, and I agree with others that Crozier should be moved back there.

We may not win but I would just love to see some time put into fixing out deficiencies than treading water.

It's tough for a forward when the ball comes floating in on top of their heads. Meat and potatoes for any defender.
It would be nice however for the Hills and other midfielders to have a forward leading up to them - McCarthy is probably good at that but has dropped off a bit whilst Tabs (again on Sunday) does all the hard work, but drops the pill at the business end. Kicking from 40-50m+ is a bit of a lottery for all at the moment.
I miss Pav charging straight out from the goals and bombing the occasional 50-60m pill through the big ones.

Roodawg,

I) When the players you are tackling are allowed to be taken through 360 or even 540 degrees of rotation in the tackle, and or throw the ball to dispose of it, of course it is going to make your tackling look weak. Short of piledriving opponents head first into the turf there is not much more Freo can do.

Couldn't agree more, if we are in the midst of a rebuild there is no use playing foot soldiers who have had 50+ games and not delivered, we had the pain last year of ditching our dependable servants some of whom were a lot better than those we are still playing every week, bite the bullet and wear some pain but we have to see what we have got to work with in Logue, Cox, Darcy, Ryan, De Lucca Nhius (spell check please).
We have dropped Ibbo, so why not Sutcliffe, Spur, Griff?
Bringing Sheets back in doesn't help anyone. We have seen what he can offer and it's not enough, we really need so experience in the forward line especially with Walters running through the mid field, perhaps Mundy offers that but for mine Ballas must come in when fit.
MJ needs to be released from a lock down role so he can be the general down back and teach the kids how to play. Playing Cox or Logue will allow him to do this and hopefully stop some of the free scoring from the opposition.
In short the elder statesmen I'd keep on the ground to guide/protect the kids are:
Sandi, MJ, Mundy, S Hill, Walters, Balla & Fyfe (this covers all lines on the ground)
Our 20-25yo stocks looks pretty solid with:
Neale, Hamling, McCarthy, B Hill, Weller, Grey, Blakely, Hughes, Langdon & Crozier.
That's 17 regular starters so let's play the next generation with the last 5 spots.

Johnson forward would be a great idea if he was good at a contested mark, which he isn't.
