Never on a Friday

Looks like Big Melbourne won't have to worry about WA muscling in on their God-given right to stage Friday night games now. Superb planning by Barnett and co., building a stadium you can't get to any time anyone wants to do anything else - like get home from work.

We can still play Friday night games, they'll just have to be against the Gold Coast.

I can't believe 100,000 people want to go and listen to Ed Sheeran. Maybe hypen could explain the attraction.

The incredible demand to see Sheeran could lead to fans paying exorbitant money to scalpers and resellers for tickets before the additional tickets go on sale.

I hope Hypen gets in early for his ticket. Will probably need to sleep out overnight outside the ticket box to ensure he gets the best seats.

You guys have forgotten the original business case. Contrary to stopping Friday night games, this actually makes them more attractive to those who matter most.
Before and after a packed out Friday night game you have two choices. Battle the traffic or spend a bit of time (and money) with mine host Jamie Packer. Take the kiddies as well, I'm sure there will be some fun activities to occupy their tiny easily influenced minds, while mum and dad have some fun with the pokies.

I prefer Ed Sherrin, his lesser known cousin.

It's quite simple. Don't have events on Fridays in the early evening. If you want FNF, play it at 7:30pm or 8pm like it is in the ES. Peak hour has already ended.

And if you want a bloody bridge, just set up a pontoon temporarily. It works fine at the Australian Grand Prix every year.

Davo, what makes you think Ch 7 will agree to holding Friday night footy back til 9:30 or 10:30 in the eastern states.

I'm not sure why anyone would pay $100+ to see this when you could just go see Ed Burley the West Australian tribute show.

Colin wanted a stadium to showcase WA and cement his legacy.

The biggest weekly sporting event for which this stadium's use would be considered was Friday night football.

Colin had in his drawer an expensive report that flagged the difficulties in transport to a peninsula as a key reason Burswood was the worst available site (cost being the other).

Colin was not the type of guy to let fancy reports and experts stand in the way of his vision.

The stadium is diminished because of his arrogance. Which, somewhat ironically, has cemented his legacy.

Friday night football in Perth is stupid. It's too early here and it's too late over there.

But not being able to hold a concert at capacity on a weeknight is idiotic.

Idiotic. Sums up the Barnett government in three syllables.

It's impractical Shane, but it's the best-rated TV slot by some distance. That impacts attracting sponsorship, which as you've pointed out previously hasn't been our strong suit. Choosing a location that precludes the marquee time slot needlessly hurts the presumptive anchor tenants.

As you point out it also hurts concert goers, Big Bash fans, Ed Sheeran fans like hypen etc.

So dumb.

There is now talk that the pedestrian bridge won't be ready until the middle of next year so all events prior to that will have a heavily reduced capacity no matter what day or time they are played. For AFL games they will need to allocate seats for general admission and opposition supporters which means there will be thousands less seats than there are Dockers season ticket holders. This could get really ugly for everyone.

I'm a fan of the stadium itself and the location is pretty spectacular (and once it's set up properly I reckon people will grow to love it), but there has to be another dedicated rail line crossing the river and going all the way to Perth Station for it to work, and that should've been part of the plan from the beginning. 25,000 fans shouldn't have to rely on a foot bridge to a bunch of buses.
