I must admit that I have taken claims of long standing media bias against Freo with a slightly "I feel it is like that but I can't really think of a clear example" attitude. Well, no more. The bias is becoming much more obvious, insidious and unnecessary.
For example, see:
thewest.com.au/sport/afl/fremantle-docke...-betts-ng-b88487948z
Ostensibly a story about how Fremantle might cope with the wonderful Betts, two paras in, we have an ad for a tipping competition. Fair enough it is the West's competition. This is followed by video of the Eagles playing Essendon, justified by a gratuitous caption. Don't they have a video of the Dockers? Oh that's right they are linked to Channel 7 who sponsor the Eagles so ...
This is followed by a doughnut's puff piece consuming more screen space than the printed word with the caption "Not many people know the mark of the year winner doesn't win a car anymore, but Nic Nat does." The relevance to the story escapes me.
And we conclude with a few more lines not saying much at all.
The whole story was click bait for a tipping competition and an excuse to advertise the purportedly only team in town, according to the only paper in town.
I don't whether to laugh or cry.
