Having seen the 7yo boys at my sons Auskick game on the weekend practicing jumper punching and rib ticklers punching/elbowing "just like they do in real football on the telly", I'm all for them stamping this out.

It detracts from the spectacle of this great game.

Would not have made any difference. How can a punch that sends a player from the field and leaves him dry retching be deemed low impact. Same for the hit on Neale. The only way to change the situation is sack the MRP and bring in some people who will assess each incident objectively.

Acting swiftly, what a load of crap, they have been shamed into acting by public opinion, and it remains to be seen whether the results will be any different to what we have now.

Yeah, poor Lachie. Hopefully with the benefit of time and counselling he will be able to look back at that Richmond game and forget about the life-threatening glancing blow he barely noticed and remember the game-winning play he was responsible for.

Where you draw the line on what is a suspension and what is merely a fine? Wrestling a bloke is clearly a fine, and properly punching a bloke is clearly a suspension, but what do you do about the annoying little taps, scrags and punches that go on during a game of footy?

I like watching the best players play football, and I reckon unless you are a repeat offender or what you did could cause an actual injury to a player, then I’d rather that player be allowed to play the following week. The AFL’s MRP decided that it didn’t think players should be rubbed out either.

But if AFL fans have decided that it wants justice/vengeance in the form of suspensions for players who deal out the heinous crime of winding a bloke, then it’s fair enough for the AFL to make it a suspension again. I just hope those complaining are not the same people who loudly pronounce the game has gone soft.

Personally, I reckon the MRP should get creative with their punishments: for example, you either lose 1/22 of your salary ($14,000 for an average player), or you can keep the money and miss a game.

A punch that forces a player from the ground can influence the course of the game. And that means a suspension in my books. The punch on Lachie, it would have been nice to get a free kick for it, and a fine, well in that case it was just fine.
The classic punch was Plugga hitting someone 60m off the ball, which meant that for the next minute or two he had no opponent - definite suspension in my books (although given their opponents the following week, thankfully not given).

I reckon someone like Buddy wouldn't mind spending a grand to punch someone.

Yeah, right. Lachie fell to the ground, obviously not expecting a smack in the mouth, and managed to collect three possessions for the quarter. Clearly it did impact his ability to play his usual high possession game. Fortunately he was able to rack up 20 in total including that beautiful final play, but for the most part Cotchin's action did have the desired impact. All this "glancing blow" bullshit is just that as I am pretty sure if Cotchin landed that blow on any of our chins we'd be pressing charges of assault and probably be pretty sore with it. You can place any spin you want on it really, but facts are facts: Cotchin punched Neale in the face and got away with it.
Let's bring back Ballas and let him try one of his "tummy taps" to test the MRP changes. They'd be finding helicopter footage from a Japanese tourist flying over Kings Park if it helped convict the dirty little sniper.

Morgan, what is your view on the penalty that should be applied to Neale, or Blakely had they turned around and whacked Cotchin on the jaw, and what do you think the reality of the penalty that would be applied by the MRP would be?

Your view says that it is all good for Cotchin, (or any other weak sniper ) to take a cheap shot at a ball player. I am happy with that, as long as the player hit has the right to retaliate without repercussions. As we saw with Dale Kickett, Jeff Farmer, Dean Solomon and Nathan Fyfe (and plenty of examples from other teams including the aforementioned Plugger) The MRP doesn't work like that. It protects the weak snipers who would not have had the guts to say boo to an opponent in the pre video replay days.

The next thing the players will do is "thrust" forcefully with an open palm in to the solar plexus. It will still have the same effect, ie dry reaching and putting the oponent out of action for two minutes but will it be defined as a punch? I heard them say they expect a punch has to be a closed fist. What about "ear massages". What about the Juddy pressure points?

Ad the elbow to the cheekbone. It will be the law that takes the focus off the deliberate out of bounds fiasco. The AwFL is always planning ahead.
