Connor's mauling of that boofhead Cotchin right after was better - good on him, well worth a free kick.

Ok - so you get $1000 fine for punching our Doig Medalist in the head; $10,000 (half suspended) for wearing red shoes and dude sunnies at a WAFL game in Mandurah. Yep, there's something wrong in Omaha, Martha.

Perhaps a fine and suspended sentence but if one of our players had been suspended for that I for one and probably plenty here wouldn't be happy.

CA, the reason why we are not happy is that we have players suspended for stuff like that all the time. Dale Kickett's short rights to the head were worth 6 weeks. Surely Cotchin is worth 2 weeks.

Personally I think the tribunal to this stage has been the most consistent it has been in years. Comparing to what went down years ago means little.
Dale Kickett's one man demolition job with fists flying against the slime was a sight to behold but to compare it to a one punch while holding a jumper is crazy. 2 weeks- no way. Isn't that what that Greene from GWS got? His was worse than this one.

Blakely whacks Cotchin after Cotchin hits Neale. Who is going to be suspended? Blakely will get 2 weeks even if he only hits as hard as Cotchin ie; careless and low impact. That is my point in the Dale Kickett incident. Read was the instigator and did just as much swinging, got 2 weeks. And the MRP has not changed, you will see when a Fyfe or god forbid Walters gets sick of the illegal tactics they have to put up with.

Fyfe already got sick of the illegal tactics and snotted Yeo. He got a fine (not a suspension) and a week later was given a bunch of free kicks for holding.

The composition of the MRP changes, and the current incarnation doesn't like to rub people out as much as the previous version. That's ok. Comparing their verdicts to that of the MRP that rubbed out Johnno a decade ago is ridiculous.

I reckon the MRP has leaned marginally into being too-lenient. Cotchin's jumper punch was acknowledged by the MRP as being right on the line, but I reckon the next bloke who is in that ballpark might get a week. There's a roughly 1 in 18 chance that's a Freo player.

This episode has a very clear message: We need to train up in look away punches.

Then let Ballas off the leash.

I dont think this incident was treated any differently to any other jumper punch, although on the higher side of impact. I personally think they are a cheap shot leaving the player hit with no ability to respond.
I don't believe in changing rules or interpretations mid season but would like to see players rubbed out next season for this offence. If that happens to be a Docker so be it.

Which means its roughly a 1/(18*22) = 1 in 396 chance that its Ballantyne. I'd take 400 to 1 that the next player suspended for a jumper punch is Ballantyne.

For better or worse it’s a perception thing. Ballas will take any opportunity he can to lay some sneaky hurt on an opposition player. Hair pulling, sneaky elbow, tummy tap, wet willy, you wouldn’t rule anything out. If Ballas landed a sneaky jumper punch while looking in the opposite direction, the MRP would be pretty sure it was intentional, because everyone who has ever seen Ballas play would be pretty sure it was intentional.

Cotchin is soft as butter, I’m not sure he’s ever thrown a punch in his life, and it didn’t look like he wanted any part of the scuffle with 4’11 hobbit boy band impersonator L. Neale afterwards. He was so scared the umps had to give him a free kick. So I can see why they didn’t consider his punch intentional.

I am still puzzled how Cotchin

I) Can punch an opponent in the head in full view of the umpire, and not have a free kick awarded against him

ii) Can punch an opponent in the head in full view of the umpire, and not be suspende for said punch to the head. After all the AwFL has been pontificating for the last 3 or so years that the head is sacrosanct.

Is it because he (Cotchin) is soft as butter in the sun and the AwFL feel sorry for him? Or is it because he doesn't play for Freo, he hit a Freo player?

With the Punt Rd end full of ferals Cotchin was attempting to make a statement at the start of the game. It wasn't much of a statement, but the Tiggy army were right into it. In my view Cotchin got more then he dished up - he knew he was going to get Connor all game and Connor introduced himself wonderfully (standing up for Neale). Cotchin came off second best (despite his free kick) and Neale had the last laugh.

And what a laugh it was - straight through the guts delivering the perfect kick for Mundy to make sure the game was ours. All the other stuff that happened in the game really doesn't matter. Neale got the break, Mundy got the goal - game over baby. Hahaha, mark it down in the history books - up yours Cotchey.

The umps on the day consistently penalised the retaliator, not the original offender - i.e. Blakely and later Crozier - consistent I guess. The MRP's decision for a fine didn't surprise me - after all, Bartel was terrorised by Macca for half his footy career (so he wouldn't have much sympathy for anyone from Freo I would think). Cotchin is a knobber, always will be, Richmond are toothless Tigers, always will be. Footy is tribal, everyone knows this and everyone in the game can't help themselves - no outrage from me.
