TOPIC: Maybe Stay in the Lift?

We played some fantastic fast paced football for 3qtrs to establish what appeared to be a game winning lead and at the last break RL decides to open up his old play book and bring out the big guns.

All of a sudden we start the last quarter with extras in the backline and behind the footy, effectively conceding the play and trying to hold on rather than continue with what's gotten us to a dominant position. In effect we don't have anything to kick to forward, players stop running and carrying, the opposition get on top and repeatedly enter their forward 50m bringing them back into a game they had long since been out of.

Can someone please tell RL to stop 'coaching' and let the players give it a crack? RL taking his coaching hat off has seen our season drastically improve and I'd like to see that continue. Was it a coincidence he had given up on the coaching gig in those final 20sec when we rose from the grave to rip out Ninthmond's still beating heart?!

Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Think it might have been the last illegal crunch in the back that took the wind out of Walters, and the momentum killers from the umps that might have taken our game down in the last Biz.

Yeah that didn't help. I thought this was the bigger problem though.

"The pressure had been intense from the moment Tiger forward Daniel Rioli kicked the opening goal of the last quarter inside a minute.

Lyon put a seventh defender into the back 50 to shore up the defence"

Maybe we were running out of legs but based on the previous 3 quarters I don't see how we'd have less run than Ninthmond.

If your 5 goals up at the start of the last quarter and the opposition roll the dice and put players forward of the ball then why don't you just do the same. It becomes a shoot out and as long as you get your fair share of success you will win. It would only take a few goals for the opposition to be demoralised. Try to win the game rather than save the game.

You never miss an opportunity to do you Biz? We're 5-3 which is about 3 wins better than most thought we'd be - crack a smile.

Ross Lyon is coaching just fine and Bond had a good trade period.

And its a beautiful thing. If you're a fan of Fremantle you got to be smiling..

Biz, I recall the "commentators"* saying on at least 2 occasions in the last quarter that Richmond had an extra man back of the square, which gave Freo the loose man in a 6 man defence.

Blowing a 5 goal lead in the last quarter is not a good sign and was the complete opposite of the previous 3 quarters where we'd looked so good. Richmond doubled their score even with some easy missed shots, almost stealing the game and I think it's a pretty reasonable question to ask why.

I never heard mention by the commentators of Richmond throwing extra numbers behind the ball in the last which would be a bizarre decision if you were trying to get back in the game. There were repeated mentions of the Tigers playing an extra around the footy but even that article I linked says RL threw players behind the ball.

The Tigers dominated the center clearances which played it's part but it was the movement out of defence where we were really let down by RL's tactic. Unless one of our talls took a big contested mark we couldn't get it out because we'd thrown everyone behind the ball, the Tigers severely outnumbered us forward and quickly pumped it back inside 50.

It was against a lot of the footy we'd shown we can play in the past month and something we should leave in the past.

I've always liked this game plan. Hawthorn Coach Alan Jeans or John Kennedy (I can't remember which sorry) addresses his player group.

Coach- football is an easy game, our ruckman taps the ball to our rover, the rover kicks the ball to our full forward and the full forward kicks the goal.

Dipper- what if the opposition ruckman taps the ball to the opposition rover, then the opposition rover kicks the ball to the full forward and he kicks the goal?

Coach- Dipper you weren't listening, our ruckman taps the ball to our rover, the rover kicks the ball to our full forward and the full forward kicks the goal.

That reminds me of Sundays, games, last 21 seconds.

His performance on the couch tonight was very good I thought. Obviously last year was Ross's fault and now that we are 5-3 is being led by the players.
Still a long way to go, we are 5-3 and could quite easily be 0-8 or any combination in between. I hope Ross has some ability because we have him for a few more years yet. I don't even think we will be sure by the end of the season,

I don't know if, when or for how long there might have been an extra man deployed in defence in that last quarter, but there wouldn't be a coach in the AFL that won't have that in their toolkit to use. It's fairly standard practice.

Also a five-goal lead is mowed down at least twice a week these days, sure it's a little harder in the last quarter (but if we'd kicked that one where I think it was McCarthy & Taberner virtually on their own in the goal square, it would've deflated Richmond's momentum totally).

What I did notice is that they weren't playing on as instinctively as they were in that last quarter as they were in the third and at other times this year. Whether that was coach directed or player mindset, or that they were just a bit stuffed, I don't think it will ever be fully clear. Sometimes you just go from being hunter to being hunted.

This is a fast elite sport with so many variables drop your intensity for 5 minutes and momentum changes and 4-5 goals can be scored quickly. We won 75% of the game time and won the match against a good hard side at the MCG....a lot to be positive about.

Go defensive and put yourselves under massive pressure? Or go attacking and risk the opposition booting several quick goals?
Dare I say it, but wet toast did a better job of overcoming a fast finishing side. But ours was more entertaining.
