TOPIC: Brad Hill

An advantage to being at the games is that you see all the unrewarded running - the leads, the chases, the following of the ball - that doesn't get picked up in TV coverage. It would be great if there was a camera isolated on B. Hill. Being at the game, you just marvel at all the kms he does. I got tired just watching him. When he started pre-season training, it was remarked that he won the 3 km time trials twice, which is amazing considering we think our pre-seasons are tough.

I don't know how many kilometres he ran, but it was said that Bradley gained almost 900 metres in yesterdays game. That's quite a feat - by contrast, a tall fisting defender who we carried in the first two games this season, could only manage less than 20 metres (in total).

Metres gained isn't a particularly useful metric to assess a shut-down defender though, is it?

I'd like to see some kind of fancy interactive graphic to explain the whole "metres gained" malarkey in more detail. But regardless, Brad Hill smashed it.

Gained more meters than the best 2 from Essendon combined. If that means anything.

Not sure how they calculate it. On the train home from the game I had a read of the 'Player Performance' stats in the game's Record. They have each player's total (for the year thus far - before the game) and the AwFL averages for each position.

There were two defenders in Freo who only played two games - Cam Sutcliffe with 339.4 metres and Zac Dawson with 7.8 metres. Divide that by 2 and you get the whopping total of 3.9 metres per game - that is, a bit less than how far a 5 year old can spit. The AwFL average for defenders is 269.6 metres (after 6 rounds).

When considering Bradley: the AwFL average metres gained by a midfielder is 308.8 (after 6 rounds). Bradley's numbers (before the game yesterday) were 373 metres gained.

Perhaps they should reveal the GPS data on each player. I reckon he would have smashed that record to. I'm sure he didn't have any direct opponent yesterday as well, because they couldn't keep up with him.

Another meaningless stat. Clive would have clocked more metres gained than anyone else, but they were all in a dodecahedron shape.

Yeah, but metres gained means with the ball, not just running like a headless chook. Even meaningless stats require some sense of purpose.

Can't wait for Steve to return then surely the brothers would set a record for metres gained by two brothers. Imagine Steve and Brad in full flight in top form. The two best running skilful mids in the game. Midfield with Fyfe, Mundy, Neale and the Hills bros all playing at the top would hoist (pun intended) us into the finals well and truly. Can't wait for Steve to come back.

He would make a great coach, no-one, and I mean NO-ONE would be able to unpick his game plan.

Then again, maybe his players might have a bit of trouble with it too.

One of our early legends. Always exciting to watch.
A top bloke, ran into him in Fed Square ready for purple army march to the G.
He'd driven over from SA to be part of the celebrations.
Luv ya Clive.
