TOPIC: Big Marking Forwards

I dont remember ever having watched a game where freo took so many contested marks. Would be very interesting where it sits statistically, if there's someone on here with half a clue how to find out . Our three BMFs mustve taken ten between them, Hamling grabbed a few, Spurr took at least one ripper and looking ahead Fyfe has to be close to taking a few hangers.
There was also plenty of excellent intercept marking.
Contested field marking was one of my five wishes at the start of the season, and it was great yesterday to almost expect us to snare a pack mark at any given point. A totally foreign feeling, may it continue!

smerf,

our BMFs took more than 10 contested marks. Tabs took 7 by himself. I can recall at least 3 each by Kersten and CamMac without even trying

Even better when Alex Pierce returns as he is in the Luke McPharlin league when taking contested marks.
PS did I hear correctly on the radio after the game that Luke has been coaching Tabs on marking, if so he deserves a payrise!
I am guilt of bagging Tabs but he deserved the "One Grab" Tab label y'day.

I reckon this year we are taking a lot more marks on leads than we have done in the past few years - even when were were higher up the ladder. It is enjoyable to watch as a style, the wheel around and kick forward to a player leading up. With Kersten & Cammac being that type of player, throwing in Fyfe/Mundy resting forward on occasions this year, and then Tabs this week, it seems to make it easier to play that style than when we had Pav. I sense that may have worked to Tabs' benefit today - and hopefyully into the future.

However Smerf, I do remember a whole bunch of commentators raving about the greatest of all time McGovern being a superstar and possible world record holder after taking 8 contested marks last week. (NB I'm not sure that marking while your opponents are being shepherded and held out of the contest should count as a contested mark.)

RM, that makes me think that next time we play the slime we get someone big to play about 10m behind McGovern. When the ball comes in they take a flying leap through the pack, hurting budgies everywhere.

Agreed, RM. My view is that a contested mark should be contested by the same person who takes the mark.

I'm slow on the uptake, so this only just occurred to me. Say you have 3 big forwards. Then the opposition might want to have 3 big defenders. But this reduces their zip out of defence, and their ability to chase and apply pressure. Which is why you try and get away with the smallest defenders you think will be able to do the job. I'd always wondered why we sometimes seemed undersized in defence...

We must surely be the team that has potentially the best group of Big Marking Backs in the AFL - Hamling, Johnson, Collins, Logue, A. Pearce (when he's back) and Dawson (well punching anyway). Can Collins or Logue get a gig against Richmond? Both were good for Peel. I realize there is a reluctance to change a winning combo.

Collins is the new SCOS. No chance.

I had an old ute once that needed 4 lanes to do a 180 - I could have it on full crank but that was the best it could do. But I love the way the game's commentators speak so glowingly of Tabs' sweeping forward 50 patterns (when really he's just trying to turn on the run) - like that old ute, that's just what it takes for the guy to turn. With a wider field - like the MCG - I believe he could make one turn one way and another back (if he starts from the boundary).

You couldn't imagine a more stressful call-up than the one Tabs faced on Sunday - he stood proud and excelled under the pressure. Whacking Hurley in the knackers was a bonus for everyone watching the game.

Polly, I bet if you hit a roo while in that ute, it just bounced off the bumper too, I'm with you, I'll take a bigger turning circle if it means a solid ride. We all see what happens when the zippy little "turn on a zac" cars hit something solid.

If tabs needs the MCG for a 180 degree turn, i hate to think what griffen needs then..

turning circle scale: dime, heel, mini, MTT bus, QE2. Scale is approximately logarithmic.

Paul Arnold had the biggest turning circle I ever saw.
