I'm assuming Mick Nolan never had a turning circle then.

He ran three or four times in a game, always in a straight line.

I did some quick stats looking at our contested marking that might be of interest . Blind freddy could see that it was a good game for us in that regard, but I just wanted the cold comfort of the numbers.
I crunched the team averages for contested marking for the last 5 years. Individual weekly totals would've been great but i couldn't find them/didn't have time to look:
2017 so far - ave11.14 contested marks/game
2016 - ave 10.22 cm/g
2015 - ave 11.12 cm/g
2014 - ave 10.8 cm/g
2013 - ave 10.08 cm/g
So we generally get 10 or 11 per game. Last game we got 18.

Big Marking Forwards:
Matt Taberner - 7 'the most by any player in a game this season and the equal-most by any Docker since 1999' - AFL match centre (Suck on that McGovern!?)
Shane Kersen - 2
Cam McCarthy - 1
So, Yeti, you may need to recalibrate your recall!
Nat Fyfe - 2
and 6 more singles

So anyway, I'm no stats guru, but 18 contested marks seems like a significant stat and it would be surprising if freo have topped it many times, if ever, in their history.

Contested marking obviously controls possession and is a great team lifter, and if snaring more around the ground turns into a trend at freo I'd expect to see a major uptick in all round performance.

I may need to calibrate my recall as you say, smerf, or one of us needs to recalibrate their definition of 'contested' (not you but the person who provided your stats).

I've always assumed that taking a mark when others were trying to prevent it fitted the definition of 'contested'.

Where did you get these stats?

Edit: Kersten took 9 marks for the game and I do not think that 7 of them were taken with no opposition. McCarthy took 7 marks and again I don't recall him being without opposition for most of them.

I'm thinking we have different definitions of contested.

Port Adelaide v Fremantle
Round 2, 2017

Contested Marks:
Port Adelaide: 1678 (until half-time, the machine that counts them broke after that)
Fremantle: -1*

*new AwFL Stat Record - this occurred when Fremantle's Friendly Giant Sandilands spiked the ball to his opponent after giving away a free kick. Two Port Adelaide players grabbed the ball equally yet had Fremantle's Mikey Walters knock it out of their hands and begin running downfield. He was called back on the new 'Midland Rule' and the stat was considered contested (and negatively awarded to the Fremantle total). Superstar Walters took to Twitter after the game declaring that the new rule should have been attributed to 'Midvale' and therefore was incorrectly awarded. The Rules Committee - which includes the former Docker great Matthew Pavlich - said that most people, having had their SatNavs pinched in Midland Gate's carpark, couldn't differentiate between the two Perth eastern suburbs. The rule therefore remained in place until such time as most poncey WA western suburb snobs could reacquaint themselves with their own metropolitan surroundings.

I just cobbled together what I could from footy wire and the afl website so yeah, no quibbles yeti, I thought I remembered a few more from McCarthy than just the one. But they were the best I could find and I just wanted to illustrate how far from our norm the weekends performance was.

Yeah, smerf, agreed it was a good performance but we weren't playing GWS or Adelaide.

I looked that the same sites to check that and now I'm wondering what definition they used to differentiate contested and non-contested.

My view is it should be regarded as contested if you are competing against an opponent and not just for a pack mark only. Think they may be using a different yard stick

edit: back to our improved performance, I put it down t several factors. Essendon didn't apply the same pressure in the second half and we had a better structure that we had the week before. I think bringing in a third marking tall forward stretched (sorry) the defence and gave our forwards more marking opportunities. That and our mid field began to look for targets more in the second half, which also helped our forwards. That aspect is clearly still a work in progress
