TOPIC: 17'n'5

Shane, my question is why on earth does our competition suddenly and arbitrarily cut the comp down to the top eight teams, five weeks before the end of the season?

Why not cut to the top four, two weeks later, then play two semis and a GF?

Or cut to the top two, the week before the GF?

Or just let the top team win, after a proper home and away season?

For what it's worth, I love the idea of splitting Derby attendances evenly between the clubs, rather than there being a home and an away Derby. Between the two games each season-ticket holder would still get a chance to attend one Derby, but it would create a much better atmosphere at both games.

There might be some logistical issues (ticketing, corporate boxes) but they could easily be worked out.

Those are all options, FDB, albeit very dull options.

The AFL is a game and there's stuff you have to do to win that game. It's not a measure of something.

The aim is to find the most engaging way of organising the game.

I think the fact that they are lower profit margin options affects the AwFL's thinking on whether to go down that track

An individual game of AFL has a scoring system to measure the best team on the day. Goals and behinds.

The AFL itself has a scoring system to measure the best team over the season. Wins, losses and draws.

But then we chuck it out near the end and have a weird season-within-a-season, where the eighth-best team for the year can jag a few wins on the trot and take the flag. It's very unusual.

You're obviously of the soccer persuasion, so my commiserations to you.

I think you're under the illusion that this is about football.

A league finishing table doesn't sell 100,000 tickets (even if 60% are given away to fat cats), or allow the AFL broadcast partner to add an extra few dollops of cream to its extortionate advertising rates.

Come on. The Grand Final isn't some cynical game they cobbled together to sell tickets. They've been playing them for over a hundred years, well before there was money in it. They play them at all levels. Finals and Grand Finals are exciting. They're fun. People love them.

Yes Shane, at places like Bruce Rock Oval, where you have to pay maybe $10.00 to get in to watch the game in the comfort of your car.

Every coach knows before the season starts what you need to do to be crowned best team of the season. That's qualifying for the finals and winning through to and taking out the GF. Who's to say it has any less validity than any other created system, you only need to decide if it hits enough of the right notes is all.
