TOPIC: Griffen Logue

Other than the last minute, I think the most exciting thing I saw in last nights game, was the " lead & leap" mark by Griffen Logue. And the fact he spent a whole heap of time in the forward line...!
At 19 yrs old, with relatively little footy experience, his body size and athletic ability and swingman/utility potential are pretty bloody exciting.
Yep, hes a bit lost sometimes, but that will change.
Yep, he's not a natural goal kicker, but that will change. In fact, I think he has a better kicking action than Cam Mcarthy, who everyone seems to be getting a bit excited about. (Really glad Cam has started "clunking 'em btw. Looked real good last night!).
Think its 'hats off' to the recruiting staff on this one.! The sizes of the other choices we may have had, will limit the overall potential of SPP and SPS, and Tim English has a way to go developmentally. So Logue is a great choice, I think, and in the long term he will "a real good 'un" for our club.
What I don't understand, is why he didnt have 3 community games and another 2 afl games off experience under his belt by now??
Roly knows best, I guess....?!?

He does have have endless potential but he is green as grass.. Definitely could be anything.. That fact that we got McCarthy and Logue for that pick is genius in my opinion.. I mean Cam McCarthy vs Paddy McCartin is an interesting one.. Paddy McCartin was a number 1 draft pick just a year older than McCarthy. Cam missed a whole year of footy so its a pretty good comparison.. I am extremely pleased at this stage with what we did last year at the trade table.. Quality young key forwards are rare as hens teeth and never really come from outside the 1st round of the draft.

Hard to make any judgements at this stage but, while he apparently has a big tank, he seemed relatively slow over the first few metres and was constantly missing tackles. I'm guessing the latter will improve with greater strength. He seems to give us more as a marking forward than as a back. Hopefully last week's kicking on goals was impacted by early career nerves and he can get that right in a hurry.

What's the story with the earlier 'dud' comment?

Thanks Walter! Interesting insights! I'm not at games so I'm only judging on by what I see on the TV, but from what I am seeing and what I am hearing, he's a relatively "blank canvas", which is pretty intriguing when one considers how to "develop" him.??

You could start him out as a back, with intent to turn him into a forward later (ie a Pav, Harry Taylor, ), or, start him as a forward in the hope you get him up, and we get what we really need (ie effective big body forwards). High risk in this, but it might have more clarity than clinging on to the hope that The Ape turns into something. And if it fails, then at least he can go back to a defensive role (ie Taz, Mcintosh).

But if we are real lucky, and his skills and awareness improve, as it will over the next 30 games, we could have a genuine big bodied midfielder on our hands. Maybe !
Its pretty exciting when you think about it, and it seems his hands are good above his head, and his kicking style is pretty good, and relaxed. There's a bit to work with their from a forward's point of view, so I reckon they are doing exactly the right thing at the moment.
It's gonna take time, but I reckon its worth carrying him for as many games as we can, and if he can clunk a few and convert a couple each week, well, what more could we want from a #8 draft pick. ??

At the moment his role has been more 3rd intercept tall or as on the weekend a 3rd tall forward. Flexibility to play at both ends. Whilst he might appear slow over the first couple of metres, for a big guy his ability to stop change directions and make repeat efforts to tackle look pretty good.

The last person I want to compare him to his nicnat.. But there are similarities in that nicnat doesn't appear to know where to go to find the ball, which logue is a bit like at the moment. One somehow made all australian and the other has played 3 games of AFL. But when he's in the contest he had taken some good marks, made some good spoils and affected the contest to our favour, so when he is in the vicinity of the ball he does well. He just needs to get himself to the ball more often.

No matter how quick you are Walter you can't run if you are stuffed. He has done 80% of a full pre season at this level. Will be very good in a few years time.

Yes Timmeh, I noticed his repeated chases to tackle. Nice to see a biggish guy prepared to play his part in applying forward pressure.

I like his attack on marking contests and he seems to have pretty good judgement and hand eye coordination in them despite not all of his grabs clunking. His kicking has been a bit below what was talked up and expected of him but I'd hope that's just nerves/youth and the pre-season 70m bomb straight through the middle proves he can do it.

He's showing signs of ability without actually doing much just yet. Hopefully he keeps getting shots at goal to learn and practice.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
