TOPIC: Crowley

Those two are irreplaceable, but irrelevant to to the thread.

Should an AFL team just let the opposition team let their best player run riot, or should we try and restrict that influence.

If so cool, or if we chose to make that SOB earn every possession, who does the job?

I'm pretty sure most teams used to put a lot of work into making sure Crowley didn't impact their player. Now they just have to worry about stopping Fyfe, as opposed to doing both.

Someone would argue Apeness and A Pearce are our Pavich/ Macca replacements. Both injured...repeatedly...one may not be a footballers bootlace. I note Alir Alir was draft pick 44 ... A Pearcs 37. I like the look of Alir....might have been a luckier pick, East Freo product too!

Anyway Crowls was defintely buggered, and here he is coaching Guilford Grammer 2 years later. But the tagger role has definitely disappeared, and i reckon Sheridan is perhaps an obvious replacement if the role was gonna be reprised ...

Their confused circle work is the best in the league. Tag that.

You're assuming a tagger will staunch the bleeding we're currently seeing. It won't. It goes deeper than tagging an oppositions influential player to give Fyfe a bit of room to shine.

I agree with the idea that Creepy was a form of talisman for the club - he was vital for a long period of time, he was the best that there was. But taggers are irrelevant in today's game - negating is more of a combined group effort that collectively denies space (with the odd backhand thrown in). The good targets simply can't be taken out of a game.

I don't think Creepy was ever properly acknowledged, he had/has a great sense of humour as well. We all loved the guy, still do. Remember that time we sent all those free tissues to GAblett? That was great - Ryan set the stage for us and absolutely everyone had an enormous laugh from it (even Gazza).

If you want a new tagging player, I would suggest Brady Grey, tackles like a mad dog, did a great job on Wingard in his one AFL game.

Except even Sheridan tagged for a while with some success and he's a crab of a footballer. A decent player like Barlow wrecked opposition players as a stopper and still impacted with the footy. A better tagger than Crowley.

Regardless taggers are overrated in the modern game with team effort in stopping the opposition's best players much more important. That was a flaw I often saw in Crowley's game where he let opposition players run by with the footy because they weren't his designated opponent he needed to stop.

With the way midfields set up these days there are far fewer 1v1 matchups like that and instead you need a team effort to not let the opposition run off on their own and impact the play. We've gone past the stage where one blokes job in the middle is to purely stop an opposition player.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Connor Blakely would make a good tagger, if you want to go with one. Hes got the tank, aggression, strength and would benefit from running with the best of the best for a while. Hes also got some height which could hurt the opposition if he found himself forward or the opposition player dragged him back. His achilles heel, his kicking would be minimised as the scraggers tend to fight in close.
Sheridan, can run with but doesnt have the size and strength.

Crowley was the reason we won a few games, not only did he stop their best player, their team mates had to try to stop his influence, therefore they used an extra player on him,so think about it two players, one the taggee the other running interference and the star of the show the tagger

I reckon you are right Slammen....Brady grey could be a good option as a tagger, but ( and yes Polly), taggers are almost extinct. Think Gill has made it this way in some deal with the coaches....
Grey needs to show us his skills have improved to be a regular part of the lineup, but, if -as I read - they havent, well if we play taggers he is probably the option.
But , I was thinking about things. Maybe Crowls loss was a turni g point into the doldrums, but the decline and getting rid of Duffers could also be a turning point , huh, MacKenzie? ??
When Duffers started getting left out for no good reason, that said to me that all was not well down there......

You are correct Mackenzie, our demise did coincide with getting rid of Crowley .... and Luke AA's retirement, .....and Johnno AA not being able to play out a season,..... and Pav AA having to play beyond his best years, .....and Fyfe AA missing a season, ....and Sandi AA having injury issues,...and a lack of talent coming thru from our drafting due in part to the compromised years where GWS and the Suns picked up the best .....

So you are correct, Crowley leaving coincides with out drop off the perch.

Our team collectively is not capable of executing team defense, whereas it will be easier to find some one who can fulfill a tagging roll. It is these incremental changes that will start us moving forward as a team again.

Seems like Roly agreed (with some of us in this thread) that Connor might be our tagging option. Bonts got away a bit in that third quarter so I wouldnt say it was a runaway success but might be worth at least keeping up the sleeve, for example you could tag Mitchell in the derby with him.

I noticed that Crowley could just neutralise one player but, in doing so, a habituated chain of play. That made him special. That, and extreme pinching.

I think Conner was on "The Bont" to hopefully teach him a thing or two about how and elite midfielder works. And the 3rd quarter would have taught him a lot I reckon.
If Conner takes hold of that learning - and maybe has to be a tagger for the next few weeks to learn a bit more - I have no problem with him tagging. But I'd hate it to be his long term role, because I reckon the kiddie ;has got it' and it would be a waste of a bloody good and creative footballer to restrain him to tagging.
Teach him a few tricks of the trade by giving him a run with role, and then throw him in the middle and let "him have his head". Eventually - and maybe very soon - he takes Mundy's job in the centre square, and Mundy 'does his stuff' in the forward line (like the weekend) or somewhere in the backline until his days are up.
In no way do I think Mundy's days are up - he was brilliant on the weekend - but, his time amongst us is short, and we must prepare Blakley ASAP !! .
