TOPIC: Crowley

I have an opinion that after the delisting of crowls, we've never been the same. I think he was the guy that turned it around for us way back when we needed an enforcer to draw the 'line in the sand' about effort and courage (ANZAC day is coming up BTW)

It seems a big bit of heart was ripped out that day.

He stuffed up big time, but worked his butt off getting ready to come back.

We lost that final when he could've come back, but after that, he got the chop and we've never played the same again. It seams the players lost our 'spiritual leader'

Since then, we've never played a tagger again. The guy that blocks, stands in a hole, nullifies the opposition, imposes himself, stands taller for the guns of the side and has the lip to cast doubt in the mind of the enemy around.

We'll get better when his replacement appears. I just don't see anyone on the list that can do his job.

Any thoughts to why and who the next Crowley will be.

I agree that we lost (read: they prematurely got rid of) a great player and someone who absolutely typified the spirit and resilience of the FFC. I would add to that the retirement of McPharlin...every game he played in felt more 'assured' for some reason.

As for the next tagger...that was looking like Barlow but we lost (read: they prematurely got rid of) him too. Can't yet see anyone in the current crop who would fit the mould yet :-(

I reckon you're onto something there Mackenzie. Lost a bit of "mongrel" I reckon, and, given how fastidiously Roly applied the tagger, and crucial it was to our 2013 game plan, - I agree - he's never really applied one since. We've had more of this Fyfe/Dangerfield head to head concept, or, simply just let great players roam free. ( ie Sam Mitchell, Pendlebury, Scott Thompson, Rockliffe ) .
Its almost as if RoLy went to one of those coaches bbq's that Gillon puts on, and they all agreed to eliminate the close tagger. Not a bad thing for footy, mind you, but the complete antithesis of what RoLyball was about....

Reduced rotations, a coach all at sea, and lack of self belief as a team has far more to do with it. One tagger does not a team make.

Nah, the loss of Crowley didn't effect much. He was good as a tagger but it's a role we had others who could step into and did with better results. A defensive player missing wasn't the problem.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Blame rotations etc, but our decline coincidently does coincide with the departure of Crowley, and the use of a specialised tagger.

Most teams still employ a 'defensive midfielder' to stop the oppositions best player from deciding the result of the game.

Disagree??? Ask mr Fyfe how he feels about the extra attention. He used to have the benefit of Crowley putting in a few blocks and rough stuff to give him a bit more space. Now he just gets smashed before the ball even gets close.

Reduced rotations has meant a lot of teams have done away with specific taggers. They will have a few run with players but they can't afford to totally negate, they need to make sure they are getting plenty of the ball themselves.

Ask Fyfe how a tagger will help, when most of the team can't handpass or kick without fumbling the ball or missing a target. You're looking for a simple solution to a problem that is pretty much at FUBAR.

He was 31, and had a year out of the game because he took banned medication to help him cope with chronic pain.

I'm not saying to keep him playing.

My question was who is our 'tagger' 'run with player' whatever.

My point was that we've struggled since he's left. We don't seem to have a player that fills the hole/role/presence that he left.

I don't see the point in letting the opposition player run riot when our best player can't find space cause the enemy don't allow him any.

The basics of the game are to minimise the effect of the enemy's best asset whilst exploiting the best of your own assets.

Crowley allowed us to do that. Who is going to do that from our current list.

We could apply the shootout mentality if we had like for like across the chess board, but we don't.

A better question would be Where's our Luke McPharlin and our Matthew Pavlich?
