IMHO blaming anyone is completely off course.

The whole player selection thing is riddled uncertainties so the idea that we should find an escaped goat to eviscerate when something goes wrong is totally self indulgent. Dumping might feel psychologically satisfying briefly but it is no way to run an organisation. As a management strategy, it produces risk averse decisions. This is a blueprint for poor performance when working with uncertainty. Uncertainty demands initiative and execution, while certainty demands planning and synchronization.

Players like Harley and Balic have known issues that mean they are available at a discount. They may pay off over the odds or they may fail. I want the club to take risks on players. That means when we get a failure you don't behave like a spoilt brat.

I do however want the club to take intelligent risks. There is a question of whether we are systemically looking at players risk propositions through rose coloured glasses; are we problem gamblers? Maybe the club needs to look at this but probably they already have. I'd bet there is a fair bit of deliberation on players with known risks.

There is a further question of whether we are handling medical issues competently. I am simply not competent to judge that. If I ever claim to be, please shoot me. I do know that AFL is extremely competitive and is played at the limits of what humans can do mentally and physically. Every year there are always several clubs who seriously underachieve because of player injuries and every year there are players who go down for extended periods or terminate their careers by injury. This is all clubs, not just us. That's the system. If you don't like it, try following darts or bonzai.

I have little problem with the players they've got, considering the difficulties in trading and the punt of the draft. But they're not helping any of them play the best footy they're capable of.

Bennell is different. They had a chance to get a full, in depth check on his status, and bargain accordingly. That sort of common sense doesn't appear to be the way Bond does things.

I'm not so sure about the strength and conditioning that goes on in the club. Admittedly, there are some pretty impressive quads, pecs (etc) but I'm not sure this equates directly to the game as it has developed - maybe rugger, maybe just in those bash/crash zones, I'm not convinced.

Some players - and Eddie Betts is a great example - play really well on a pair of durable chicken legs. Stevie Johnson has a body like a worn out insurance salesman. When it comes to Harley, I reckon he's more like Eddie and shouldn't be bulked up too much. In my thinking, maybe they've gone for too much when what he's got is good enough.

Not sure - either way he was an excellent get, he's got heaps of talent/skill and this latest injury only sets him back a week or two. No need to spack-out over it, it would be demoralising to have him in the team (as they're going at the moment anyway).

Polly, the greatest example of stuffing up a player by weight training in living memory is what was done with Paul Medhurst. From being a brilliant aerialist who could hit the ground and kick a goal before anyone around him knew the ball was in the vicinity, they turned him into a lumbering bulked up shadow of himself. He went east, stayed away from the weights and the chickens, and returned to his best.

For the life of me I don't understand why recruiters (not just Freo either) select players for the skills they show, then try to turn them into something else. Would you buy a 1969 Monaro, then try to turn it into a semi-trailer?

Unlucky or not does anyone actually think Pitt, Simpson and Apeness were going to be any good anyway.

Mora was the inly one i consider unlucky.

Semi-trailers must mean it's time for a Colin Sylvia joke

Agree with Polly and Raglan on Betts and Medhurst. Walters, as carp a season as he's having, shows how bulk isn't required to be great. He's just lucky he's incapable of stacking on the kilos. Lord knows they would have tried to add weight to his frame (and removed his agility in the process). Luke McPharlin didn't need it either.

I was worried when S Hill put on a few kilos a couple of seasons ago but he's managed to maintain his brilliance. We all saw Nat Fyfe's body before it went berserk. How much did that contribute to his second leg break?

You see those guys who have injury troubles at AFL level and then drop to a state league, lose some muscle and find their fitness again under the lighter workload. I think there needs to be a better understanding of players' body types.

Two years ago the drafting decision with Harley appeared to be worth the risk. You would expect due dillagence was undertaken on the medical side, most of us and probably the club aswell were more concerned about the of field stuff being turned around. Hawks have just paid a lot more to get O'Meara who seemed just as speculative if not more so on the injury front when they traded.
It's not an exact science and the options when trading are limited, especially if players don't want to be at your club. We took a calculated risk , if he was a sure thing it would have cost a top 5 pick and then some which we didn't have.
