TOPIC: Drafting

If you look at how a few of the top teams play.

At our peak, it was manic pressure around the ball carrier, force the turn over and some pretty strong 2 way running. Just how taxing has that bean on the team? We look slow this season and we were slow last season and finished off slow in 2015.

Hawthorn build a game plan around accurate kicking, pint point the pass, maintain possession and slice the opposition up. Being able to bring in some free agents sure helped but they will be in a hole for a couple of years now.

Bulldogs have a young, fast team who handball forward a lot to overlapping players. Works especially well given they play indoors the majority of the year

The question really is, Hawthorn would go to the draft and find guys with the best kick available at their pick. Sydney and GWS had their academy picks, so got away with that. Geelong seemed to unearth some quality players lower in the draft.

It is almost like we have lost our identity and how we want to play, which in turn means we have a bunch of all sorts. If they want to be an accurate kicking team and deliver the ball well by foot, then guys like Dawson and sutcliffe who aren't accurate by foot shouldn't be playing, danyle pearce butchers it a bit too much as well. If Nick Suban is going to play then he needs to be a defensive sweeper as he does have a very nice kick on him, if not then play him for peel as he isn't a small forward whatsoever.

If we are going to be a strong tackling team then guys like De Boer and Barlow would still be playing for Freo and playing on the ball, as this is where they played their best footy.

Right now I would go for 22 players who are happy to give 100% effort regardless..

I'd argue it's still a little early to rate the success of the past couple of drafts, but what is probably hurting us a fair bit, given the development trajectory and age demographic, is the blow-out that occurred in the 2010 draft, where none of those top picks are left at the club and probably the slow development of our pointier end of the 2011 crop as well.

(I also think Dylan Roberton leaving was a bit unfortunate, anyone else who would be happy swapping him for Sutcliffe right now?)

Coincidentally, or not, these were the first couple of drafts for Lloyd & Co. They probably had Bondy perched on their shoulders too, 70's bank manager style (and every modern coach I've ever heard talk about recruitment says they don't get involved).

Since then their work hasn't been too bad. I still applaud the Josh Simpson choice, even though that didn't work out (they probably could've of handled it better, but I bet 16 or so other clubs would've unfortunately handled it the same or worse). They've tried for a few taller options, who have generally been injury prone, which isn't all that rare in taller younger fellas. The Lever vs Weller is an interesting one, I for one was a bit gobsmacked that they passed on Lever, but Weller also has plenty of what we need in pace and skill.

Morgan makes a valid point, other clubs with similar draft picks haven't exactly had the greatest strike rate with the picks either.

DD, the Bulldogs won the flag last year without a power forward, but my comment was directed at the fact that our problem is not the lack of a power forward, it is the lack of finish in getting the ball in there. We had Pav last year,

We have a power forward this year. He is not being played as one. A radical thought, but why not put Fyfe or Sandi up forward (and leave him/them there for the duration) See if the availability of a target who is always where he should be gives us more structure and cohesion.

RM, Jake Stringer is fairly powerfully built and Tom Boyd at 200cm is no midget for a fwd line?

Jake Stringer is comparable to Fyfe, and Boyd was a power forward for 1 game.

2 comments - perhaps more musings:

DRAFTING ...
#1 - Geelong dynasty was built on one draft they absolutely nailed and the with the help of the father son selections before they changed the rules ... and it just happens to be recognised as the SUPER DRAFT of all time. (Scarlett also a FS selection at pick 45)

Pick 8: Jimmy Bartel. (Geelong) three premierships, two AA, one Brownlow Medal.
Pick 17: James Kelly. (Geelong) three premierships, one AA.
Pick 24: Steve Johnson. (Geelong) three premierships, three AA.
Pick 40: Father son ... Gary Ablett. (Geelong) captain, two premierships, eight AA, five CC, two Brownlow medals.

Re Freo:
- that was year we traded out pick #1 etc for Croad and McPharlin
- Sandi taken in Rookie draft

In 2006 Hawkins also went to Geelong as FS selection at pick 41!!!! Allowing them to take Selwood at 7.

That was the year we traded out picks #8 and number #13 .... you now know them as KPPs Ben Reid and Jack Reiwoldt

Geelong again - definite beneficiary of trading in the best attacking mid in the game aka Dangerfield for the sole reason he wanted to go home.

And some sobering reading:

#2 - I am concerned we don't make players 'better'. Worsfold for all his sins has three former AFL coaches as his assistants --- you reckon that might take some pressure off and bring some ideas to the table? Remind me again who we have an what their credentials are?

Rm, I generally like your postings but must state that according to the AFL web site Boyd was a number one draft as a kpp and played 11 games straight at the end of 2016 and to my understanding generally always named as the bullies FF and Z Cordy at 193cm also played the Gf in the fwd line. My point being is that most successful clubs have at least two big forwards who can do a reasonable job.

I will stand corrected, Noddy, ( and I do like many of your posts also) but I thought Boyd played most of his goodish footy last year as a ruckman, and surprised many pundits with his performance in the GF, causing them to think that he may make it as a KPF after all. Cordy is comparable to Fyfe also.

My point being that we have the players already to do the job. Our problem is that we don't have the game plan to use them properly in those roles, hence my call to let the players take over the asylum.

If our recent drafting has been as good as some people say who do you reckon besides Neale and Pearce would get a game at another club?
At this stage the only one I think would be a possibility is Langdon and maybe Weller, but you'd be getting a very low draft pick swap for them if there was interest.

Drafting has not much to do with it. Morgan's analysis is spot on - others don't do significantly better than us.

Where we've fallen down lately is getting the best out of the players we have. I give Roly to the end of the year. If our players don't have the mythical, all in your head, just a feeling, confidence back by round 18, he needs to go. No big payout. He needs to hand in his resignation.

We've got plenty of quality players who can't show what they've got As has been pointed out, Blakely is the latest to get the "high half forward" kiss of death. If Roly can't let our players enjoy playing and take the game on, then he's lost them and they won't come back. Your choice Roly - are you going to stop being a dick about it?

How has the Bulldogs drafting gone over the years? Can't find an Ablett or Bartel in there anywhere.

Some helpful father-sons (Libba, Wallace, Hunter etc), nailing their top 5 picks (Bont, Stringer) and getting lucky with a few late and rookie picks (Picken, Dalhouse).

A bit like us without the father sons or top 5 picks.
