TOPIC: Drafting

Until you can reliably identify whether the blokes we are drafting are generally crabs or whether they are being poorly developed, you can't be 100% that our drafting is solely too blame.

A case in point is Taberner. He's shown real glimpses of talent but hes been horribly managed as a developing player.

You need to be able to identify the problem before you can cure it

West coast play finals nearly every year and it doesn't seem to hurt their ability to find decent footballers. Our list is very poor and that is Chris Bond's fault.

You've posted a clear disaster......Crozier and Sheridan can't get a game and their improvement stalled, Pearce was looked after by our medical staff....Simpson was failed by his pun club at 18...you know considering how many chances Mr KFC had...and the rest have been lost through injuries or delistings ....still waiting on Bennell....we gave draft picks for him....and have we lost next years second draft pick??

How has Taberner been horribly managed ? Does management make him drop most of his marks ?

Sydney gets Academy picks so they aren't a great comparison. But out of curiosity, who was the best first or second round draft picks from Geelong in the period I chose?

Saying we drafted poorly because we are bad is a very lazy argument. Like, Sylvia lazy. It neglects draft position, development, injuries, and coaching.

RM, here's the current top 8. Wont change much. Every one has a KP power forward. Power in the sense of taking marks or at least contesting pack marks in the forward line, and kicking goals. We need one - badly. We had one when we were up there - Pavlich.
PA - Dixon
A - Walker
R - Rewoldt
M- Hogan
WC - Kennedy
E - Daniher
G - Hawkins
WB - Cloke

Walba,

sorry to ruin your rant by bringing facts into it but guess who was our leading contested mark last year. Beat Pav by a considerable margin as well.

It was Tabs.

He's a far better mark than people give him credit but he is suffering from the old one week in three weeks out school of development. Any wonder he may have confidence issues? Left to himself, he's a very good mark but how can you develop under those conditions?

There seems to be a strong element of denial here. How many draft failures do you need before you acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, you have a drafting problem rather than a development, injury or coaching problem.

Walba,

No denial here at all. We do have a drafting problem and that's been identified for more than a few years now. The criticisms that have been leveled at Mr Bond, Chris Bond have been many and detailed.

My view is, however, that it is not a one dimensional problem. There is more than one problem to fixed here and you won't get the results you want by dealing with one and ignoring the other.

We have drafted the wrong types many times and left holes in our list. Remember the refusal of Bond to draft key position talls? Then when we do, we screw up their development.

I hate saying this but the slime are doing better because they are coached better. They are still maggot endorsed scum bags but they are better than us right now

RoLy saying he has nothing to do with drafting tells me there is a problem. By-the-bye, what was he doing at the draft table then?

He was sitting there, NOT drafting, Polly.

Its a little known side occupation employed by many leading footy coaches, NOT drafting!

I agree with Yeti to look at our drafting alone doesn't come close to addressing the issue, I would assume that our opportunities to draft in stars would be lowered, as Morgan rightly points out the system is designed that way.

We have tried to follow the Hawthorn/Geelong model and get in free agents for whatever reason this has failed, you could fill a thread on this alone. There are signs that even the mighty Hawthorn are finally starting to feel the effects of access to higher picks. Players like Hartung Ceglar etc may not be good enough to take up the mantle. I am not convinced that Geelong are genuinely in a position to win the premiership (I could be proven wrong).

It's true our highest picks have been a disaster, but our development of players seems to be ordinary as well, when was the last time we had a player come onto the scene and tear it up GWS have umpteen top 10 picks but still find space for Taranto. We have spent years rotating the same players in and out of the team Mzungu, Suban, Deboer, Silvagni, Crozier even Taberner while apparently other players offer little more and seem to be gifted games Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Dawson, D Pearce. I don't mean to assassinate these guys, only to point out that occasionally dropping different players when out of form may have more integrity.

Our game plan looks old and out of touch other teams have worked out how to counter it and treat it with scant regard. We have a playing list that does not look to be enjoying their football and play with no natural flair or adventure. They seem to be turning up to a seven year old job.

I don't propose sacking the coach (yet) we don't want to be Richmond, but during this year we need to look at how to bring our football team up to speed with what's happening now. Whether this be addition of some innovative creditable assistants I'm not sure. I think we may have had a couple in Scott and Kirk that could have contributed a lot previously.

Our ability to get players on the park is poor and cover for them when they are injured non existent. 2013 Pav and Sandi missed the first half of the season from memory. Natanui hasn't played much footy for two years and the Eagles continue to play well.

I have my suspicions that something has gone badly wrong and there may be multiple fractures behind the scene that the club is doing well to keep under wraps.
