TOPIC: The Game Plan

Corporal its a shame you cant see the game live, actually may be its a blessing because if youve got hair, you wouldnt have any now.

Let me describe it like this because I have the misfortune of going every week.

Its like a bizarre Pagans Paddock. Except there is no Carey left in the goal square.

All the forwards clear out and run down towards the back line to help out our besieged defenders. All of them. Occasionally Mc Carthy and Walters only go down to the Half Back line but usually its all of them.

All the midfielders attract to the ball, like really attract, like they are all within 1 - 2 meters of the actual ball. RoLy speak calls it "bees to a honey pot" but he does nothing about it. There is no outside ring. There is no one on the fat side. You could throw a blanket over our whole midfield brigade.

To give them credit, they often win the ball within 1 m of Sandilands, handball to another guy, 1m from Sandilands, who handballs to Sandilands and so it goes until eventually under extreme pressure they decide to just boot it forward. Sometimes it then lands at the defensive 50 m line and sometimes we win it again and sometimes it just rebounds back for a goal. Its about a 50:50 chance either way as the tumbling ball is literally a lottery.

When we do win it at the defensive 50 we do either two things. Kick it long to a couple of the opposition who have decided to stay back along the centre line (remember there is NO ONE in the front half, off screen) OR we look up and consider our options, (if the ball is in the hands of an experienced Docker). Seeing no options forward of course, the player then kicks it sideways or backwards into the maelstrom of congestion. This is another 50:50 ball. Sometimes we even mark this kick.

On it goes kicking around the back line, each kick at 50:50 odds of being intercepted until someone blinks and a miss kick occurs, inevitable turnover, Goal.

You ask about the game plan, thats it. Im not joking. The best kicking team in the league wouldnt be able to get it past the centre line with this game plan.

Well done Rhufus that is a spot on summary and who is in charge of this GP but Ross
The other point is that Ross is destroying the young talent like Langdon,Blakely & Weller as when they play seniors all their natural talent/instinct is knocked out of them
Compare Beveridge to RL in how players are encouraged to play with flair and an attacking game plan

Thanks Rhufus. That's exactly what I was thinking may be happening and if it's the case then it really hasn't changed from a few years ago when I was a country member.
So really it does seem that our game plan is completely out of date and Roly hasn't moved with the times, because this is not what other teams and coaches do anymore.

And OGS, that is exactly what players who have left the club have said about the game style.

Our game plan has been derived from the famous children's board game called snakes and ladders

We may have a game plan, and it may even be a good one, but you aren't going to find out what it is by watching our games.

You can't execute a game plan with as poor skills under pressure as we have shown, especially in the last couple of games. Passing back can be a part of a good game plan but it needs to be executed properly too. Legoing a set of what-ifs together won't reveal a lot.

Here it is plain and simple. We don't take on the game. Players have no license. It is coached out of us. You cannot create enough goals out of defensive grinds, players need to be creative, not reactive.

Other teams however, are excelling at executing moves at high speed with the skills required.

The pain is watching 17 other teams and enjoying the way they play football more. Win or Lose.

The Cult of Ross should drink its owen koolaid.

Blocker I would strongly disagree with you on that if we had no creative players. However we have a plethora of them so why not play to our strengths, not try to guess the oppositions weaknesses and play to them, coz that ain't working

I didn't say we don't have creative players, I said it is coached out of us.

We have a game plan, and as PR's Oz observed, as I did from being at the Toilet v Saints game barracking my butt off for the Saints, they played like we did when we were damn good a few years ago. The game may be more attacking now but the good sides also apply immense pressure, just like we used to.

As Fyfey said in the presser yesterday which he handled very well, it's not a matter of not having any skill, but each players ability to use that under pressure. Some blokes can do it consistently, and others not. Unfortunately when too many F it up under high pressure, it tends to flow into the rest of the team.....a domino effect.

We've got a good game plan, a raft of good players but some are past it and need to be spoken to about producing the goods or start thinking about another career. The Bullies showed last year what a side with a good mix of players can do if they are motivated and don't have players who are past their best on the park.

I'm looking forward to hopefully seeing some of our young guys being given a good run of games in the Bigs.

So again it will be all up to the players to change our fortunes......

I don't agree that it is the execution of skills, or lack thereof, under pressure that is causing our problems. The players have no confidence in some one or something. Most of these players have produced the goods under pressure on plenty of occasions. It gets back to at the moment not having confidence in what they are doing, so not producing the skills they are capable of.

How many times do the experts wonder how a team can transform overnight once a coach is sacked. It is because the players are getting a new message, one they can understand and relate to, one they can act upon with confidence ,one that gives them a light at the end of the tunnel, that is not the headlights of an oncoming train wreck. Sack the coach, Bond, and the selection committee and turn that light on.

So did Chris Mayne not have confidence in kicking goals from 20 m out for a number of years because of a lack of skills practice or someone or something, or because his best had passed him?

Michael Walters missing from 35m out? Nope, something's wrong in Cockburn.
