So, it didn't take long for AFL coaches to work out a way to exploit the 3rd man up rule. In the Richmond/Collingwood game, Griggs from Richmond nominated himself as a ruckman, even though he wasn't even close to the nominated Collingwood ruckman. Hence, he came from a long way out from the ruck contest, and since a Collingwood player 'impeded' Griggs' way to the ruck contest, Griggs got the free kick, which led to a shot on goal (he kicked the goal). You would think something like that would work in our favour too. Clearly, everyone would expect that Sandi would be the nominated ruckman at the ruck contest. But, if, say, Fyfe nominated himself as the ruckman and was blocked on his way to the ruck contest, then that should be a free kick to Fyfe everytime. In this scenario, Sandi would be just another tall midfielder.
