TOPIC: The Youth Myth

The people pulling the trigger on the trades and drafts are the key.

For all the Suban comments we got him (or the pick) for Warnock to Carlton.

Ditto Crozier for Palmer under free agency compo.

Bring back Phil Smart. Wasn't he the one that nailed the the 2008 draft: Hill, Balla, Suban, Clarke, Walters in main draft and de Boer, Clancee, Broughton, and Jay van Berlo in rookie. Oh and Fyfe in his draft year.

You actually need to be able to spot the talent AND pick where the game is trending.

Give the players there head !

I think the worse thing you can do to a young player is to stop them from playing there game !

Work the game around the players rather than the players around the game plan !

Let them go , Go play !

I thought Smart brought us sfa early on, that's my recollection.
I haven't got the skill to bring up his recruiting successes and failures.

Phil Smart pretty much had to contend with Cameron Schwab's (and CC's) kid in a candystore approach to list management, which hampered him getting an unencumbered run at recruiting.

It takes a few drafts for any recruiter to get a hang of their job and the clubs requirements. It's likely too rash to judge a recruiter on their first few drafts anyways and you run the risk of having those off-sync first few drafts over and over should you jump ship early.

Well the only recruiting success we've had in a number of years now is Neale.

But it can take a few years to really know the true success of a draft pick. It looked like Morabito and Palmer were rolled gold, with years of reaping the rewards ahead at the end of their first year's. To me, Weller, Blakely, Tucker, Pearce, Langdon, Grey and Hughes all look pretty likely. I'd also say Spurr has paid fair dividends and Crozier looks on the cusp.

In fairness to Schwab and CC, another few years of sucking might have seen the end of the FFC. It wasn't so much a kid in the candy store as much as a payday loan to put food on the table.

Surely we had at least half of St Kilda's or Footscray's sucking history allowed to us, which would have meant a free swing at another 10 years of puckering the lips?

We tend to forget the details with time... and neglect to give credit where it's due as a result.

It was Damian Drum who stuck to his guns and drafted for talent rather than trade, netting us Pav, Hasleby and Leigh Brown with high picks.

Phil Smart was a good recruiter who made some excellent picks including, if my memory isn't busy telling the time in the Swiss tradition, insisting on Fyfe when others weren't interested.

Morgan's right about Schwab and CC too... they were backed into having to improve things fast, remember Demetriou calling the club a basket case when he was COO under Jackson? They got the club rolling again through a heavy focus on promoting any and everything Freo they could sell to the public. They started the TNT thing after the games too...

the point is, it's not an exact science or a perfect world and it's too easy to chuck around criticsm while forgetting the story.

However, if you're rebuilding then you'd tend to play kids as much as you can without throwing them to the wolves without some protection. To be honest, I thought RoLy had done quite a bit of that over the last couple of years anyway... which just makes the whole rebuilding announcement that extra bit cheesy to me.

I've just had another idea that should go nicely with playing talented players in their prime. What if we kick more goals than the other team?

You have opened a can of worms Shane; What if we stop the other team scoring more goals (and points) than us.

They all have to be coached and developed properly regardless of talent. Sydney played three or four kids last night who did not look out of place - some had been in the system for two or three years. Others were drafted last year. When they are ready they get a game. Considering the strength of their ressie league it's quite amazing how quickly these guys come up to speed.
In the main ours get 400 games with Peel a game with Freo and then back to Peel.
Regardless of what's being drafted I'm of the opinion they are not being coached or developed as well as some other teams do it.

I think we have 3 issues

i our first draft pick should always be the best player we can get regardless of position taking Logue in our first round was a mistake.
ii we don't develop players well, I don't know why but our youngsters generally don't come along as well as those at the top clubs perhaps we need better development coaches.
iii Lyons game plan was picked apart by late 2015 if it doesn't change we will continue to struggle.

Guy who needs a good memory when you’ve got Google? But yeah good point, our brains can be selective both in our memory of distant events as well as in current perceptions with a bit of over-emphasis on certain things.

As an example, my comment was more on the conditions Phil Smart had to contend with as a recruiter, rather than anything near a serious critique of CC & Schwab’s reign. I remember looking at it a little while back with a bit of a query of whether Smart had a patchy record, but seeing that almost every second year he had the shuffled down picks stone to squeeze some blood out of. He did seem to get some decent material to work with when he had some decent material to work with.

Also CC has our second best win/loss ratio as a coach and we rapidly improved when he came on the scene, from 2 wins in 2001 to 9 in 2002 and then 14 in 2003.

Although while we’re there…I don’t remember the holdings being in any particular peril at the end of 2006. Certainly putting the farm under mortgage wasn’t required for survival. There they gave up on the development of a couple of young forwards to import the shanker virus from Collingwood. We’ll also never know whether that particular set of events severely hampered the confidence and development of Murphy, but I always thought it might. So yeah, playing the kids, having patience for their foibles, can work a number of ways.
