TOPIC: The Youth Myth

I've read on this forum multiple times that we should be playing the kids to accelerate their development. This is a myth.

Case in point, Nick Suban was some years ago touted as a 'future captain'. Had numerous games put into him. Now what? Other examples - Sutcliffe has basically played since early in his career, still a crab. Deboer was also another 'future captain'. The list goes on.

My conclusion - Bizkit was right. Talent rules. We should have taken the chance at number 3 to get a top shelf talent onto the list. I didn't think it would hurt us, but it has.

So we should be playing talented players who are in their prime.

I think it might just work.

Just did a quick run through dogs team tonight and as best i can work out. They have 4 top 10 picks playing, 2 between 10 & 20, 4 rookie lists, 1 pre-season and remainder from 20 through to 70.
Not sure if this vindicates Bizkit but looks to me that there is something else that contributes to success

I read that first post and thought it was a question from that Eddie show and starting looking around for a friend to phone.

Ricco,

Just to help you out here. Pav was youngster when he came to the club. Ditto Haselby. Ditto Fyfe, Sandi, Elvis...ditto, ditto, ditto.

Every great player started out as a kid who needed games to develop. You could probably count all the champions for other clubs as well. No games, no development.

But, and here's where you struggle, they won't all develop into champions. Suban is a case in point.

The thing is, you never know if you never develop them and you never develop them by leaving them out of the side and playing known failures as a preference. You know, like Suban, Sutcliffe and the spack.

Playing the kids to develop them is not a myth. Playing the same old stagers because they are going to win you a game certainly is.

I think that developing players you pick is more important than the picking them in the first place.

Pavlich vs Polak
Neale vs Alex Forster
Mundy vs Dunn
How many current players have come off the rookie draft?
(Can do this in every draft, probably in every club)

Draft is a lottery. Got to develop them when you get them.

Play the kids.

You are right about father sons Morgan, one being Hunter and Cloke another not sure on McRae, the other notable father sons would be Wallis and Liberatore but they aren't playing. I didn't break it down to this level as I am not entirely sure what the advantage gained was for these players when they were selected, and this is beyond the control of anyone at any club. although an argument could be made for the club making a big error here.
The point being that there are different ways to do it and different success rates by different clubs. Multiple high picks for Carlton and Melbourne still have not delivered success.

Where are all our father-son picks? Why wasn't the club telling all the players to have as many kids possible 20 years ago? Bloody Neesham, bloody Drum

Reading this forum it sounds as if playing the young kids will somehow automatically correlate to the getting much better quicker. Pav, hase etc were all top talents when they came.

I must admit I supported the idea of recruiting hill, hamling and dropping down the order. Now I am going back more to bizkits point of getting a top line player to the club. Development puts the icing on the cake. With the likes of Sutcliffe we are still baking.

However I do agree you don't know if you don't try them.

In fairness to Suban, he was tracking well until he broke his leg, he seemed to flourish under Harvey but a new coach and maybe a different role saw his development plateau. It's not always the coach's fault the player has to also be able to adapt to the new regime like Pav, Fyfe and Walters have been able to do. Some players choose to follow the coach and continue to get selected. Our coach does not seem to have a good eye for football talent but can get the effort from those with a professional approach to their own game and development. By giving so much game time into those identified as young talent is our failure. I recall Leigh Mathews opinion that by 50 games you know what you are going to get when he was referring to Stephen Hill, Crozier likes the big stage so did Grey some rise to the challenge and until you play them you won't find out 20 games for Peel could also bore them.

Rhys Palmer,
Pick 7, rising star winner.. Can't get a game at Carlton, his 3rd club now.

Suban was pick 26, Sutcliffe was way deep in the draft.. 70 something?

For every lachie neale.. there is a richard tambling.. or aaron fiora
