Sorry to have to say this Dockerlanders after watching the game on Sunday I realised the poor performance is just a continuation of last years efforts.I think the coach is in trouble and the team lacks quality players, after the game I could only count 7/8 players of the 22 who would realistically get a game at any other club.
Its going to be a long cold winter.

I also noticed a team that hadn't really played together much and weren't really working as a team. Sure, we seem to be down on player quality, but I'd wait for the team to get a system going before we totally write them off.

So, you counted Fyfe, Sandi, Neale, S. Hill, B. Hill, Mundy, Spurr, Hamling, Walters, Ibbotson, McCarthy, Langdon I suppose. Agreed with the others struggling to get games, but Griffin, Johnson, Weller, Blakely would easily slot into most teams I reckon. Probably jury out on D. Pearce, Suban, Sutcliffe.
Then there is ZacD.
Looks alright to me.

We are quick to criticise the Slime puffing their chests out after one game, so lets not be so hasty in writing our team off after the same... (we were pretty terrible though...)

Beside the fact that I think we should appreciate long cold winters while we still can, I'm actually pretty comfortable where they're at. It's not a million miles from where I expected them to be at this point of the season.

Under all the blunders and mix-ups there were some promising signs in terms of ball movement and if you subscribe to the "yet-to-gel" theory you could see when/if it happens they'll be pretty competitive against a lot of teams this year.

LT, are you really 'sorry to have to say' that we're no good? I feel as though if that were true, you could probably have left it to the other thousand posts on the subject.

Perhaps anyone who thought we were going to come out and play like a well drilled outfit in round one with all the new (and old) inclusions this year was probably reading too much into the preseason games.

I don't really care if they win or lose so much this year, as we would likely have been an outside chance to contest finals anyway. But for the love of Christ I expect to see a competitive outfit that looks as if it has some idea out there at what it is trying to achieve. The team looked so completely and utterly lost on the weekend, in all areas of the ground, and it could have been even uglier if Geelong didn't let us off the hook a few times.

Mine is not a slight on the players either. I think we have the cattle to be very competitive unit by mid year. In my view the weekend's performance was a complete embarrassment for Lyon. I think he has another three weeks to show us a team that looks like it is trying to execute a game plan or the blow torch will be well and truly applied.

Lyon's pretty comfortable with being embarrassed. He makes no excuses about that...

Mayne and Mzungu, who we discarded, got games for Collingwood and GWS respectively. If De Boer was fit (injured at the moment) he would have got a game for GWS for sure.
Alex Pearce and Bennell would get games for other clubs. Not sure about Zac Clarke.

For being completely and utterly lost they did alright to nearly match Geelong in scoring shots and a heap of other stats.

Likewise Lyon has done alright across 9 or so seasons for someone who has no pride in his performance and has "NFI" how to coach.

I'm with FD on this one. After one round "We are quick to criticise".

I'm better than that. I'm waiting until round three before I lose my rag.

Mayne as another poster has stated met his quite average average stats and was quite average.
Mzungu is older and broke down for half a season.
You get the picture, they had no place in the FFC future. If we'd held Barlow, Gu, de boer etc we'd be one year behind in rebuilding future quality.

We have and have had a number of players who are wafl type, Joe average players for too long..a good coach can dare I say it almost have modicum of success with a few of those type of players, but you likley will not win 1, 2 or 3 GF.

Players who consistently make mistakes under pressure or don't have the full quiver of attributes to bring to each game will likely keep a side in the middle or at the bottom of the ladder.

Sure Noddy, but the slime won a premiership with Rowan Jones. He was a great mark, but had one of the worst kicks in the AFL. But like Zac D, he knew what his role was and stuck to it.

But clearly we missed Barlow when things were scrappy and the ball was in dispute. Go back 3 years and when the ball was up for grabs, I was pretty sure we'd come out with it. Watching on Sunday I became convinced that Geelong would come up with it, because they did.

Sometimes I think coaches can be too negative. Too worried about when they look bad. It was never a good look to see Barlow chasing an opponent who'd gotten away from him, but people probably never noticed the other half dozen times when that opponent never even got the ball because Barlow was smarter and got in a better position. Midfield speed is overrated.

The only one I disagree with is Barlow. You can't tell me he wouldn't have been better value than Suban or Pearce last week.
