TOPIC: Freo Players To Protect Captain?

I hope the players do because the umpires certainly won't!
At least 30metres off the ball & Fyfe gets thumped into and put down from behind (was it Stanley?), not knowing it was coming....dog act!! Match review? Nothing. Fyfe awarded free kick.

Like most things, Mikey has to step up and lead the way again. Yet, it was great to see Cam ready and willing to rock as well - he was in there in an instant, a true blue Docker. For some, I guess me included, that scuffle was the highlight of the game.

It's astounding all 3 weren't cited and given 2 weeks off. That's the usual start to R1. Along with a loss of course.

Other than the 3 Brownlow Danger probably picked up, the umps had his back. It's a disgrace how Fyfe gets roughed up. If he played for anyone else, he'd be going home every week after a game without going in the ice bath .

In previous years the MRP have come up with footage that shows a player going down behind play. i.e. the gut punch.
Found guilty, these players have received fines and or, in the case of Freo players, suspension. (Ballas comes to mind - but someone out there will know!)
Why is it, that this particular "felling" went unnoticed and unpunished?
(1st quarter Geelong player came from behind, off the ball, and put Fyfe down).
Oh....hang on....he didn't undergo a concussion test did he?!

Good to see the coach come out in the media to address the issue, have been arguing this for some time. I believe that umpires are influenced by the public conversation and we have had very little voice in this arena over the years. You only have to watch a few episodes of AFL 360 to understand how biased the commentary is.
It will be interesting to see whether Fyfe will be offered more protection or Dockers players protecting him will be penalised.
Regardless of the outcome I still take some satisfaction from our club stepping up and putting out some of the things the supporters have been screaming for years.
Unfortunately would have preferred it happen when these issues were having some impact on our games.

Actually pleased to see Roly come out and say something about this. We've got so used to taking whatever is dished up by umpires, MRP , etc that this was a pleasant surprise.

The club should set up a Fyfecam.

Which bun will they mount in on - Fyfe's or McCarthy's?

There's a lot for Dockers supporters to be grumpy about these days. The treatment dished out to Fyfe in round 1 is yet another layer of frustration. To my mind, there's only two possible explanations as to why the umpires failed him. Either the maggots chose to completly ignore the actions of Geelong players, or were overwhelmed by the sheer number of infringements, and worried about stopping the game too often.
Whatever the reason, and despite Ross Lyon's very public intervention, I don't expect the Dockers to start receiving favourable treatment from AFL umpires anytime soon. The AFL is inherently and demonstrably biased in favour of a small number of Victorian based teams.

and The Slime. (Which I really don't get, as they have proved over and over again that they 'bend the rules', on and off the paddock.)

I much preferred when it was our blokes roughing up Brownlow Medallists from other clubs. Perhaps it is coincidence, but I've recently come to the conclusion that players like Fyfe deserve extra protection by the umpires from taggers.

I recall when Fyfe had that dodgy shoulder in his early seasons with the club - I remember clearly Chris Judd ramming him on his taped up shoulder over the boundary (and after a whistle) late in a game. He was out for weeks after that one and never even got a free kick from it. I don't mind if he takes some bruises - with all the muscle he's put one, he can take it now. But if Stephen Hill always gets a free kick out of a Fyfe rough-up, and Mikey gets to shirtfront some yob, I'm all for it. Bring it on - you just get in there Hilly and have a ping at goal.
