Good point DBTS, exactly how many full training sessions with the rest of the squad has Bennell completed in 18 months since he arrived? 2, 3 maybe less? I think it's going to take a while once he is fully fit before he gets a game.

Footy is littered with talented players who never amounted to anything because their bodies weren’t up to it. Bennell – like Morabito before him – may turn out to be one of those players. But talent on the field is still what wins you game, and on our team Bennell would be a top 5 talent. He’s worth the time and effort even if he is a small chance of getting on the park.

He’s got dodgy calves, and it’s not a straightforward diagnosis. There’s no scientific measure for how much a dodgy calf can tolerate before it tears again, which means there is a bit of cautious and informed guesswork involved. If an increase in workload means his calf is sore, you go and get it scanned. Maybe you back him off a little. To suggest in any way that there is malpractice or subterfuge going on because of a scan is a huge reach.

Although I think one of the mistakes Fremantle make is that they require players to meet a very high level of fitness before they're cleared fit. So they'll never go - this bloke has a calf issue, let's keep his training load down and play him out of the goal square. In battle of the footballer versus the athlete, the footballer isn't even allowed on the field any more.

I reckon you can see that playing out poorly with the AFLW team. The Melbourne and Brisbane women were not all traditionally athletic but they could all play a good game of football. The Fremantle players were all very good at running long distances and keeping their body mass index in the required zone but some of them had not much more than a rough idea how to play football.

This is like people are posting on different websites with the responses coming in to statements that were never made.

I'll speak slowly for you.

Bennell may well be another Morabito but that is hardly the point.

The point that was made and was conveniently ignored is that he went in for scans, had some form of injection and has subsequently missed training sessions, yet Roly has come up and said nothing to see here, he's on track.

The disconnect between the facts and his summation has led some to question whether Roly is being up front.

How you can work that out to be an allegation of malpractice or subterfuge is entirely beyond me. Sometimes just being contrary fails when you don't make sense

Like many on this site, and likely at the club understand, any recurring injury is a sign that a player will not be a regular contributor to a team. Although there's always hope, as Menzel and Malceski demonstrated with 3? Knee reconstructions each.

Fingers crossed for Bennell personally.

Freo's requirement of high fitness levels is probably based around the requirements of Roly's version of Roo's game plan. You have to be able to run all day and mob tackle opponents so they can't score. In that scenario, it seems that high levels of skills were less of a factor compared to high levels of semi-skilled effort.

The game has evolved past this scenario where perhaps we haven't.

When the rules were changed to discourage negating game plans, the need for football skills has risen substantially and this is where we are failing. Your point on the difference between athletes and footballers is exactly the issue....and we seem to lack footballers and a game plan that supports them.

That said, in Bennel's case, I'd be taking that more conservative approach until he can at least be expected to run out a game. We are not there with him and maybe we will never get there.

I think the coach does his best to communicate most messages taking into account the player, team, club, general media and social
Media madness. He would generally know what the likely outcomes are for each scenario, but being under the microscope like any public figure has to choose his words very carefully.

I'm not sure where Harley's at. All I know is that it doesn't help matters having an untrustworthy deflector come out with the baloney sounding info (which is interpreted in any number of ways). Me, I would rather some German speaking bloke - doesn't even have to be a doctor or anything, just some bloke with the right sounding accent - stand in front of the cameras and spruik Harley's conditioning. That I would believe (and I would move on to the Port game this weekend).

Yeti - you are saying that some are questioning whether Lyon is being upfront and yet you don't know how I arrived at an allegation of subterfuge? I suggest you examine the definition of subterfuge (spoiler: it involves not being upfront).

I'm sure aspects of Bennell's training are going well. I'm sure there is still cause for concern about his calf. Those things aren't necessarily inconsistent. I'd also suggest that scans and injections are more common among elite sportspeople than the general population. What you might see as cause for alarm, others might see as normal treatment. Certainly the Essendon players were turned into pincushions and the playing group didn't bat an eyelid.

And yes, there does tend to be divergent and parallel views put on message boards. It is not a direct conversation, and as such, it doesn't matter how slowly you speak, people are going to run in different directions.
