I remember Leigh Matthews causing a bit of controversy when he claimed that ruckmen were overrated. I think I'm starting to come around to his way of thinking. 50-11 hit out advantage at 3/4 time and for what? Plus if you're a ruckman who can't hold a mark in the forward line and kick goals when you're the biggest blokes on the ground you're not much help to your side.

Probably agree Corporal..... but cannot blame Sandy for what is happening out there. A game plan would help for starters....!! Does Roly really think last years ' alledged plan' works.??... And he'll trot out the 'rebuilding" theme at the end. And expect us all to put up with this crap till 2019. Problem is not with Sandy....!!

I'm talking about one dimensional ruckmen overall, nobody in particular.

Guys like Tippet, Ryder, etc are more valuable because they're mobile and kick goals even though they may lose the ruck knocks.

And I'm not too sure which category young Darcy fits into, but am concerned it could be the former.

If we actually kicked it to his advantage in the forward line it would make a big difference.

And as for hit-outs: we get that many more first possessions but it's what happens after that that is the problem. So many turnovers and fumbles. Some is confidence and some, sadly, is ability.

Sandy spoon fed our midfield tonight. If the ruckwork had been reversed we would have lost by 100+ points.

Fercrissake, we won the the clearances and still got smashed. Imagine if we couldn't get a hand to the ball in the middle?

NOT over-rated at all.

Yeah the midfield plays as a team and a ruckman who dominates the taps is pure gold when the rest of the midfield take advantage. I'll continue to cite the arrival of Micky Barlow in 2010 as evidence of that. As stated above, we still won the clearances tonight, but just couldn't quite get it together enough to make it count. The winning of the inside 50's is a great sign of improvement though, given how lowly those numbers were last year. And we were playing a prelim finalist from last year to boot.

Okay, let's make something clear. I'm not bagging Sandi. He is a legend of our club and any near success wouldn't have happened without him.
My point/question is has the game moved on making his ruck style obsolete. He could have won 100 hit outs yesterday and we still would have lost. All opposition teams know they will lose the hit outs against us so coach accordingly. they either shark his knocks or sit right on our main midfielders and tackle them as soon as they take the ball. Is it the coaching because let's be honest it is so predictable.
Ruckmen who kick goals are like gold, especially in a low scoring, non functioning forward line like ours. Look at WB last year when they won the GF without a recognised ruckman but Boyd who did a lot of the ruck work around the ground took a number of huge grabs, kicked goals and was unlucky not to win the Normy.
Every year in the pre season the club trots out the same line about how Sandi will go forward and be a big danger to the opposition with his presence and marking....but it never happens! Griff is a similar sort of ruckman, and Clarke has never been of much use. It's too early to say what Darcy will be like but he certainly seems more in the lumbering big bloke category than mobile goal kicking big man.
There's been talk recently of how we've only ever recruited one good forward, but I reckon you could say the same about our ruck recruiting. Lack of a good mobile goal kicking support ruckman to Sandi never seems to happen.

i. That he is are only decent option.
ii. That he needs a good support ruckman.
iii. That we should have recruited a mobile goal kicking ruckman before now.
iv. That we need to come up with a better way of capitalising on his dominant hit outs.
v. That the opposition find it easy to counter his dominance.
vi. That we need a support ruckman that take marks around the ground and in the forward line.
vii. That the best teams seem to have a combination of ruckmen that compliment each other, not two that are virtually the same.
