Managers of the Eagles' new Lathlain Park development project have revealed six-year-old data was used to deny the presence of black cockatoos at the site, despite residents repeatedly pointing to evidence of the protected species.

The site was cleared of 98 of its trees last August in preparation for the training facility development now progressing, for which the paperwork tells a different story to the results of a citizen science project conducted over the past three months.

The eagles are elitist, they don't want hard working cockies around them. They prefer the white leghorn variety of feathered friends.

According to Ben Wyatt's letter the 'Great Cocky Count' is slated for April 9th this year - looks like they won't need any calculators (as long as their fingers haven't all been amputated).

A mate of mine counts the Carnaby's out near Toodyay every year - the numbers have been increasing over the past decade. I don't know much about it, but he told me that the cockys mate for life (no such thing as a divorce court in their community I presume) and that they only will mate if their nesting site remains intact. That means you can't cut down any free standing eucalypts (alive/dead) before assessing whether or not the cockys are using it as a nesting site. Once you cut down a tree that is used as a nesting site, they stop mating/raising hatchlings - they live a long time.

Recently I spoke with a woman working on a research project at Perth Zoo - they're attempting to breed the endangered Western Ground Parrots from around Albany. According to her, the funding has run out and there are less than 50 of the species still alive in the bush.

I enjoy roasting up a chook as much as the next fella, but I think it's about time that we start paying attention to things like this - time for Vic Park to quit acting like Stirling Council too.

That's all good and well but if you can think of another way a football club can train on multiple ovals of slightly different dimensions, other than clearing land for several ovals, then I'd like to hear it.

Well, just take a leaf out of our book - get a chunk of an industrial waste dump (where nothing will grow), dozer a few flat spaces and use some gps-beeping witches hats. Bob's your uncle (and Ben Wyatt can still be your best friend).

I would have just gone with different coloured chalk. Although it's probably harder to get a grant for that.

No way, the Feds will kick-in cash for anything stupid - chalk out a few lines for the dozers in the Beeliar wetlands and they'll be in it full bore.

Back to those homeless cockys - true story: a few weeks back I was floating around in my backyard pool and a whole pack came over and started chattering away in a neighbour's yard. There must have been over a dozen of them - I mentioned to my friend that I've never seen them around where I live (only ever seen them around some dams in the southwest before - Waroona and south). I've seen the odd Carnaby over the past 20 years, but never the forest red tails. I thought (at the time) that seeing them around my neighbourhood was a bit weird - but seeing as they're hooning around because they're homeless makes a lot of sense to me.

Bit disappointed really. Parrots flying overhead, Polly in a pool looking up - would have expected quite a different ending to that story...

I'm a bit disappointed that we lost Lathlain Park's best attribute - its enormous car park. It was the best parking in the WAFL. Granted, I live 500m from Lathlain and have never left a WAFL game sober enough to drive, but I always looked at that car park and admired the ability of Perthlings to build big open car parks.

The trees were ok too.

Now that I think about it, you'd just have to tell them the coloured chalk was for a nature play playground. Leave the trees there, tie a swing tyre up and use the sack of money they gave you to buy some of those wifi lockers.
