If I'm being polite I'd say it's more about modernisation than commercialisation but it's really just another nostalgic whinge about the death of the VFL.

Pretty well hits the nail on the head. One can understand the nostalgia for the VFL.
Running a sporting competition is s tricky business. I think the AFL too regularly chases short term popularity (i.e. money) at the expense of fairness and the long term good of the game.

The demise of the VFL has been greatly exaggerated.

That read like an undergrad essay (which I guess isn't far off The Conversation's brief), and I'm not sure what the point of it was. Even the author felt the need to point out most fans don't care about the issues he was raising.

People get nostalgic for local grounds, and there's something undeniably great about them. But you can't fit 60,000 people into Victoria Park, and while substandard localfacilities seem quaint as a one off, it's a terrible operating model for encouraging attendance in a national competition.

If you want to watch local footy go and watch local footy. If you want to watch elite professional sport being played in a small rundown stadium 5 minutes from your house you are probably out of luck.

The author is basically complaining that AC/DC doesn't play pub gigs anymore.

I listened to this coversation between Bob Murphy and Martin Flanagan a few months ago and remember them too commenting on the AFL and the commercialisation of footy. Even if my memory has failed and they don't touch on commercialisation much, the whole of it is a good listen if you have a spare hour.

I do think Andy makes some good points, but the elephant in the room that he has ignored ( or deliberately left in the corner) is the footy supporters dislike of the way the AwFL has continually changed the rules over the last 15 or so years to suit the commercial interests in the game: ie broadcasters, sponsors, advertisers. It is shown on most unbiased and level-thinking fan sites: eg Dockerland, that messing with the rules is one thing true footy supporters hate.

He lost me in the intro;
"degree of the AFL’s detachment from general footy fandom was evident by its recent underestimation of the passion of footy fans for attending the women’s competition"

That first game was a lockout purely through good marketing and planning of the AFL, it was free and played at a small ground just to attract the "lockout" media attention. In an about-face, players from Brisbane are now complaining not about where they are playing the GF, but the fact they are playing as the lead in game to a men's game. So the novelty of the competition has already disappeared to the commercialisation the author is trying to talk about.
