it was only Caaaaarlt'n but always good to win. Nice to see the old blokes stand up again and the newbies and last years newbies put in an effort. I'm excited again.

I loved seeing the fridge and Logue out there tonight, but I get the coach now. I must say though the number 2 can kick a long way. However when it comes to a daisy cutter over 30, there may be some time needed to get that in order. Great job by the young blokes, but I recon that blooding will really make them keen and work hard. On the other side of the coin, gee I've been impressed with number 12 over the last two weeks. If he can keep that up for a season he'll own CHF. Thought he a real impact tonight around the ground, really mobile and he kicked well and looked dangerous with ball in hand. Best I've seen him since he did his knee.

It was only the Blues but there was real effort by our boys with a few rest periods. There's pressure to hold a spot amongst the group and that's what will drive us this year.

Balla was great until he went down and watching the effort of Walters and the Hills together was fantastic. Looking forward to when Harley revs up too.

Harley's; you ride them don't hide them. Time to get it out of the shed and give it a good run before round 5 or 6 (slime). I can't wait to see our mids tear Poodle and The Old Sniper a new one.

I think the boys had a good hit out as a lead up to the season proper. So good to see Cam McCarthy slot a few and what's more he has some very serious upside, considering he's been out of the game for such a long time ( I had some difficulty distinguishing between him and Fyfe when the ball was on the far side).
Jon Griffin is playing good footy and seems to have a good understanding with Sandi. A few more marks in the forward 50 from each of them would put the wind up some opposition coaches.
The Hills are truly alive and Sonson combines really well with them and the other midfielders. Walters must've missed at least 3 or 4 sitters in front of goal!
Some real good signs. Where we will finish is difficult to predict. In the top 8 would be a good start.

I see good signs. We look quicker for one. We are also creating plenty of scoring chances but burning them. Like McCarthy up forward. Hamlings marking is great. Really good signs. We'll scrap it out for a spot at the bottom of the 8. Injuries will probably determine how we go.

Yep, a lot to like from last night. Langdon, Tucker and Blakely look the goods. Hamling, McCarthy and Hill are solid inclusions. For all of those putting Darcy down, his tap work is outstanding, at 18 an heir apparent and as for Logue ... 18 years old and a one step 55 to 60 metre goal. Give him 2 or 3 years and the future is looking bright indeed. I just hope he is allowed to develop and learn his craft at this level and not the WAFL. Imagine Renshaw being left to languish in shield cricket just because he needs to, NOT.

Putting Steven Hill in the "guts' is a master stroke. Whilst he's never going to get the numbers of Neal or Fyfe, he makes every possession count and you just know that something good is about to happen.
It's a thing of beauty I tell ya

Slightly different vibe to after the Geraldton game.

We are a fickle lot.

Playing in 2 consecutive games with a 37deg day and following a 6 day turnaround, this was a good preseason buildup. There were plenty of noises after Gero but that was inevitable. We'll go into Rd1 as underdogs, exactly how I like it. Let the games begin

Western Bulldogs got a flag by brilliant use of close in handball.

Watching on Friday night I got a sense that Bond had said, "statistics show 350 handballs gets you a win".

Thought our ball use was really off the mark with a lot of unnecessary passing.

McCarthy and Brad Hill are great pick ups. Hamlin is a ripper too...

That's the problem with your Chris Bonds of the world. He thinks there's a trick to it. What the Bulldogs did isn't as important as how they did it. They got a flag because they did things well not because they used a secret formula others can copy. It's about execution.

It's about playing footy well Shane, however you play. All these "new game plans" rely on the same thing. That the team using them has to kick well, mark well, handball well, tackle well, and pressure the opposition into not doing these things well.

Save the execution for the likes of Bond and the Steves.

What we know Raglan Matt is that there are many game styles that can win you a flag. You just have to be the best at what you do.

Clarkson is not a genius, he just understands this fact.

I see a quick Freo team emerging: the Hills, Weller, Langdon, Ibbotson, Pearce and Sheridan are very quick. So is MacCarthy and Hamlin.

I wouldn't be worrying about close in tactics as much as getting the ball into space.
