Barlow had to go after his 40+ possession game, anyone who shows had badly the head coach has stuffed up by playing him at high half forward for the last 3 sessions obviously has no respect and needs to be exited stage left pronto.

Being an inside midfielder doesn't preclude you from getting a handball receive. It's about balance. Anyone who thinks you can be an elite team with a plodding midfield comprising all four of Neale, Mundy, Barlow and Blakely probably thought Damien Drum's 'just go harder' philosophy was a year away from being successful.

As for Barlow getting a 40 touch game, didn't Neale average 35 over a while season?

Best case scenario for Barlow this year was injury backup or as a tagger. Both of those scenarios are a waste of his last couple of years of good football. Also, if we are rebuilding, do you really want to give unjury replacement games to a 29 year old?

AFL season 2016: Michael Barlow revives his career with ...
www.theage.com.au
Fremantle midfielder Michael Barlow's Barlow's future was in jeopardy in May, but he has saved his career starring as a tagger in recent weeks.

There's nothing worse than having too many players getting 35-40 possessions a game hey!

And then to only use him as a tagger would be terrible too. Best tagger we've had since Crowley. In fact has any other tagger ever picked up over 40 disposals whilst shutting down his opponents?
But he doesn't have enough pace. So how do these slow players manage to get the ball so often? Must be football smarts, reading the play, putting their body on the line, common sense or something.
Sheridan's got pace though. Pity that he doesn't really like the physical stuff and would be lucky to have picked up over 20 disposals a hand full of times, let alone 40.
But his disposal let's him down. Pearce is three years older than Barlow, only plays well when we win, not known for putting his body on the line, consistently butchers the ball, doesn't tag and gets around 20 disposals on his becoming rarer good days.
Sutcliffe, often played on the wing. Another ball butcherer who would dream of getting the ball as often as Barlow. Not renowned for his pace.

Can anyone name another club and the player they let go who besides being able to regularly find the ball over 30 times in a game, was also a great team man and mentor, would do anything for his club, is well respected on and off the field by team mates and opposition and then got nothing for him?

Interestingly enough Pavlich in his book either had him on the bench or next in line in his team of the best players he had played with. He also publicly stated that he hoped and wanted to see Barlow offered a contract that would keep him at the club. He didn't include Sheridan, Pearce or Sutcliffe. Knows something about the game Pav and maybe he too saw the value of keeping him in purple.

Geez your harsh, Prefect.

Pav would have had Barlow at his best in that team, CA. He is an injury risk now and Freo needed to make some hard calls. I don't say you are wrong about Sutcliffe and co, I would not have them in the 22 and I don't think they will last much past this season.

Yep, true Prefect. Good one. Although he is 34 already and very slow which apparently is not good!!!

RM, get your point too but it's hard to say who you keep and don't keep judged on if they might get injured. You could say the same about Bennell, Ballantyne, Apeness, Johnson, Sandi or Fyfe I suppose.

Or Morabito, or Pitt, that is my point CA. They have to make these calls, and we don't always agree with them at the time.
Let us revisit the conversation in September, and we can judge who is right or wrong. I won't be surprised either way.

He's gorn, let it go.

I'd have loved him to be offered a year, probably was too, but wanted more.

The real test will be if the Spanglers can get him into a jumper that fits. Then we can start bitchin.

He sounds as puzzled as we are by the decision.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

In 2012, Sandi was palming it down to Mundy, Barlow and Fyfe before he got injured. In 2013, that midfield and Crowls nearly won us the flag. Let's now compare the 2017 mids, in Fyfe (chas recipient), Neale (Doig medalist) and Hill (No. 3 draft pick with elite kicking skills). Throw in Mundy and Blakely on occasions, it's an engine room to rival the days of Judd et al from the budgies. So playing Barlow anywhere else would have been crazy.
