Hasn't seemed to worry Sydney, Hawthorn, Slime or Geelong who are up there every year.

Except you have more than 3 midfielders Morgan and you can certainly have more than 3 inside mids when most of them can go outside too. In fact about half a side are midfielders these days with smalls at either end getting mid time as well, Barlow definitely had a spot to play amongst those.

Just from Corporal's suggestions, some of those other teams had the following as almost pure inside mids:
Sydney - Kennedy, Hanneberry, Parker, Jack, TMitchell as well as a number of kids who were great inside like Heeney and Hewett
Hawthorn - SMitchell, Hodge, Lewis, Burgoyne and Shiels

There's plenty of room for Barlow, getting nothing for him was stupid too.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Didn't want a one year deal plus he was already spending time with peel. Other players needed developing in the mid it's not right to play him half foward. Had to be done for both parties. I thought we covered this last year

We did discuss it last year and I disagreed with every point.

I. He deserved more than a year long contract
II. He shouldn't have been at Peel
III. He is a fantastic role model and bigger body to help develop younger players as well as having plenty of football smarts to pass on
IV. He shouldn't be played at half forward
V. It didn't have to be done at all

I agree but to waste him at half foward wasn't helping anyone. So it had to be done to play some young guys on ball.

Biz, Stephen Hill has been a revelation playing the inside mid role. He's a No.3 draft pick with exquisite skills. Keeping Barlow would have been a costly mistake and a dent in the development of Blakely. Like I said, he was of value not now. Playing him at half forward would have been a disaster. He's too slow to play that position. Good luck to Mickey, he'll always be remembered.

He showed when put back on the ball what value he was with 30+ disposal games. They then used him as a tagger where he shut down his opponents and still picked up mid 20 disposals himself.
They tried Sheridan in the same tagging role with minimal success before sending him back to half back. Barlow over Sheridan anyday.
If Sutcliffe is playing anywhere other than half back Barlow is a much better option.
I'd also play Barlow before Pearce. Mickey loves it hard and still plays well the side is losing while Pearce....
Barlow is also capable of kicking more goals than most of our midfielders.

Has slotted in perfectly at GC and amongst their best already. GC are in a similar position to us with regards to trying to build a more consistent side. They obviously see the wisdom in drafting a wise head, strong bodied player who will give 100% all day.

More than anything (and that's saying something), Barlow is a great team man. He set a great example on how to train, play hard, make the sacrifices, yet also not get carried away with himself, lighten things up and focus on helping other team members as people.

You don't have to be stupid with emotion to see he'd still be a great asset here. I can see the point that he would be borderline in the nuts and bolts of being first choice when everyone's fit, but if it were up to me I'd find a way. If they somehow jag a finals spot this year, I reckon they'll be cursing letting him get away so easy.

Biz, most of the Swans players you cited can play 'outside' or other positions. Even the Hawks played Mitchell and Hodge rotating from halfback. Barlow, Neale and Blakely are one dimensional players, who are good at that one dimension.

Micky ain't no stable pony or fringe midfielder. You play him in the guts or you let him roam free for someone who will.

Lyon thought we had better options in his position. I tend to agree. Gc17 don't, so Bond let him go to cause some mayhem for them and eek out a couple of more good seasons and extra pay days.

Sad as it was, it was the right thing to do.

Barlow has as much of an outside game as almost all of those players except for maybe Burgoyne and his pace. Same as Neale.

Priddis and "knees up" are both Brownlow medalists so they attract more free kicks. Their speed in the team is irrelevant

Nah, those Swans guys like Hannebery and Parker are guns in the forward line. Mitchell and Hodge are beautiful kicks of the footy and can set up the play wonderfully. Barlow extracts balls better than a lotto machine, but waddles like a duck and kicks like a tortoise. The same can be said for Neale and Blakely. Fyfe and Mundy get a gig because they are better players.

He was going to struggle to get a game.

Barlow will get opportunities at GC because they need more of his type of player. Laugh if you like, but the player who has replaced Barlow in the inside midfield is S Hill, and I would have him over Mickey any day. No point in hanging on to him on the off chance we have as many injuries this year as last year, win win.

Interesting to see Blakely play outside mid/half forward yesterday.

Nah, Barlow/Neale as only inside players doesn't cut it. No pure inside player gets as many kicks as they do. Guys like Priddis & Mitchell get a big amount of possessions by shovelling(throwing)the ball out.
You can talk about those other guys ball use but let's face it out of Mundy, Blakely and Neale the only good user of the ball in that lot is Mundy.
Barlow kicked more goals than any of those three so his finishing was actually quite good too. And that's when he wasn't just playing as a defensive half forward either.
