“Again it’s asking for the umpire to make that decision so we’ll just see how we go on that.”
And therein lies the difficulty with umpiring in the AFL. The umpire doesn’t just have to view whether a hand/arm goes above the shoulder, but has to decide whether “the players’ legitimate attempt to tackle appears to be correct and that the high contact is caused by the player ducking…”, all at high speed, with a sometimes obstructed view and with home crowds baying at them. Pre-conceived notions of the two players involved (some fair, some unfair) will come into play.
I feel bad for the umps.
