Players making a fair tackle will not be penalised if the footballer being tackled puts themselves in danger by either dropping their knees or raising their arms to force the tackle above the shoulders.

It sounds like another "interpretation" that will allow Margetts and co wriggle room when they need it.

The first big controversy of the season will be when Ballantyne gets a broken jaw from a swinging arm by Mitchell and has a free kick paid against him. This will be the first application of the new rule, and will come in R6.

Surprisingly there is no Freo player in either of the "top 10 for high tackle" tables.

And therein lies the difficulty with umpiring in the AFL. The umpire doesn’t just have to view whether a hand/arm goes above the shoulder, but has to decide whether “the players’ legitimate attempt to tackle appears to be correct and that the high contact is caused by the player ducking…”, all at high speed, with a sometimes obstructed view and with home crowds baying at them. Pre-conceived notions of the two players involved (some fair, some unfair) will come into play.

I feel bad for the umps.
