In 2017 we need goal kickers – lots of them who can kick more than 20 in the season – by my reckoning only 3 did in 2016 - Walters was tops with 36 Ballantyne with 26 and Kersten with 22. Tabs got 18. Only two others kicked more than 10.

McCarthy might reach 20. Tabs should add a few to last years tally and Fyfe if he strolls forward a bit. Yarran showed promise but we need to keep fingers crossed there.
I agree we need to find goal kickers somewhere in the squad. Can the coaches manufacture one?

The game plan was and is a bigger problem, it didn't matter much who was forward for us.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Improving our goal scoring can't be put down to just (or even mostly to) the gameplan though. Any gameplan can look ordinary if it's not executed properly. Prima faeces case is Richmond trying to ape Hawthorn's plan in 2015 (or even Freo early 2015 vs late 2015). It's a mix of personnel and more to do with execution of the gameplan over the gameplan itself.

Although I would put a caveat on that regarding a gameplan which stays too focussed on holding the fort for too long.

There's a bit of evidence to suggest that having a spread of goalkickers is better for the team, including some statistical analysis I saw a while back. As well as whatever forwards we can get firing, having a few midfielders nudge towards 20 goals, calves permitting, would be huge.

The bigger question is who will take the mantle of number 1 forward ???

The key to kicking a bag of goals has faff all to do with "game plan" ....its all about skill execution. Take a look at the teams that can pass under pressure by hand or foot and they were the ones in the top 8. We now have a team list that could / should deliver better skill execution and that means more team goals.

The best theory on defensive footy I have heard is "If you are kicking goals the opposition aren't" We proved that in the first half of games in the first half of 2015 (If you can understand my drift) and we need to get back to that, with the increased firepower we can load up up front.

The best way to kick goals is to win the ball out of the middle, or move it quickly once you cause a turnover. If our best players are on the park, we should be able to win a lot of ball from stoppages.

The real question is whether we can cause turnovers and move the ball quickly. Can we put enough pressure on their ball handlers (maybe), and do we have enough skill and courage to take the game on in the back half to rebound (maybe not)?

You guys think I'm nuts, but I'd love to see D Pearce play off halfback. We need someone crazy/brave down there. Add Crozier and we have some attacking flair in the back half to compliment the steady defensive nous of blokes like Spurr and Ibbo (if he remembers how to play).

The talk from the club about our forwards playing more instinctive footy is promising. We have natural footy players down there who will kick enough goals and cause enough mayhem if they get enough opportunity.

2013 Dockers not unlike 2016 Bulldogs. Constant pressure on the opposition without the ball and good movement of the ball when in possession. The forward line was good enough with Pavlich, Mayne kicking straight, Ballaz, Walters and midfielders chiming in for the goals.

2016 was turnover city and, as Bizkit has mentioned on numerous occassions, we were too slow against GWS, GCS and other fast teams. Against other teams like Melbourne and the Slime we were just NFG enough. Being crucified by injuries didn't help either.

I must say I'm crazy enough to agree with Morgan about Pearce. He's got 2 years left so you need to get some value for that. He's a good enough kick if he has a target to aim for, like Johnson. The Hills need to stick to the wings, they're much better runners than Pearce or Crozier.

The other problem was the opposition's loose man in defence who kept marking the clearing kick out of the half back line. Pav was constantly double-teamed and assaulted in a vain attempt to provide a target.

I sincerely hope we get fast, clean delivery out of the backline to multiple tall forward options - CamMac, Kersten, Apeness, Taberner - who can either clunk it or bring it to ground for Ballaz, Walters and other small forwards not injured or in jail by Round 1.

I'm not brave enough to have $20k on Freo at 50/1 to win it all, but I do think we have a chance of making the top 8. As always, home wins are the key to success. We only had 3 of them this year. Hopefully our best players stay on the park too.

I heard Roly mentioned that the Dogs kicked an average of 86 pts this season which ultimately won them the premiership. So the premise of kicking 100 pts to win an AFL game is a lot of crock. Freo's season from hell was attributed to their game plan. They went away from what they do best is giving effort both sides of the ball. We've loaded up on young talent for 2017 and beyond and that tells me that Roly is going to go back to the way we played in 2013 to 2015. If Fyfe, Sandi, Mundy and Johnson can stay injury free, we'll not only make the 8, we'll give the premiership one almighty shake. Agree you need goal kickers but you need a spread of them. Looking at the Bulldogs team, only Stringer and Tory Dickson kicked 40+ goals. The Bont was next with 26 goals. They're not your power forwards nor are they the most accurate kicks for goals. But what they do best was further down the field where they applied pressure around the ball. That's what we were stood for during 2013-2015. They proved that low scoring games can be exciting and wins you a premiership. Its a no brainer.
