Drafts need to be looked at over (at least) a rolling three year period. Over that period our mix of draftees looks ok. Depending on how charitable you are, this year was either a correction or an overcorrection. We'll get the answer in time.
I typically stay clear of discussions about who we should take in the draft, or how well we have done. Scouts watch hours of games and tapes, talk to coaches and analyse combine results. I would be guessing based on second-hand reports or one-off games. I think most on here would be in the same camp. I think in recent years our drafting team has done pretty well. I'm not sure why there is such cynicism about our drafting.
We could have taken a more highly fancied pick at 3, but instead we picked up the second best prospect from WA, who looks like a goer who takes the game on, a big lump of a ruckman, and in McCarthy someone to kick it to in the forward line. I think we could use all three of those types of players. It will be fascinating to see if those actual three players have more value to Freo than the lost opportunity to take McLuggage or SPS.
