The damaging defender has come from relative obscurity after starting the VFL season in Coburg's development team. Ryan soon forced his way into the senior side and was the only mature-age player invited to the NAB AFL Draft Combine, which requires at least five nominations from League clubs. However, shoulder surgery ruled the 20-year-old out of testing. A good reader of the play and clever interceptor, Ryan took 12 marks - five contested - and had 29 touches in his senior VFL debut against Box Hill.

He has a bit of pace so might be able to keep up with some of the smaller forwards unlike our current small defenders but more importantly he is calm and composed with the footy and disposes of it pretty well. We'll see how he goes at AFL level with the physicality as that's a bit of a weakness in his game but he could be good for us off half back.

Definitely seems like a composed and careful kick of the footy. Good signs that he racked up 29 possessions on his debut at VFL level and that he was entrusted with the kick-outs in his first year.

According to that vision

Position: Defender

I didn't see him get a single possession forward of centre.

And although he could roost the ball 50m out of defence, his disposal looked dodgy. His draft position (and disposal) matched Sutcliffe.

I wouldn't be expecting too much.

Contrast that with 2015 Pick 61 Yarran who looked the goods in the 2015 WAFL GF and backed that up in the AFL this year (notwithstanding his present issue).

I think the recruitment team has done it again. This bloke will go alright, the big wrap on him is he won the Fothergill Round medal after only playing ten games for the seaso. The last chap we picked who one this medal was Michael Barlow.

I seem to recall reading somewhere he had the second best disposal efficiency in the VFL last year so you are sadly mistaking
