He's the sort of big lumbering kid who bullies his way around the under age competitions but gets found out when he comes up against senior players. I hope he proves me wrong but you have to wonder about the recruiters' thought processes.

Eight years ago we drafted a 203cm skinny rake with a basketball background and tried to put weight on him and turn him into a footballer.

This year we've picked a 201cm 113kg footballer whose first appointment will presumably be with the dietitian rather than RTB and they'll look to trim 6 or 7kg off him. Give the kid a chance.

I am equally confused.
Battle was seen as an absolute bargain at 39. We could have taken him at 38.
Instead we pick a pick 90 with our pick 38. I hope we are proven wrong and the recruiters got it right.
The other 3 picks on the other hand are excellent.

Been googling this kid and I'm going early that he'll have a cult following at Freo.

If you work on premise that being a decent AFL ruck takes time toiling away at your craft this kid is a lock:

- 45 min one way trip to swim training every day and used to eat his brekkie and get changed in car for school.
- 90 mins one way to footy training
- quoted as saying city kids are lazy and don't get it because they have too many options and don't have to commit
- left handed ruck which apparently is rare and an advantage as others aren't used to combating it
- described by every coach I find quoted as aggressive and competitive (and can actually ruck)

One hand we've got people here complaining he will get found out at next level.

Look over the other rucks and KPPs they're all big these days ... And if he didn't get found out here for his mobility no reason he is at any more risk than any other player taken yesterday. It is actually more of an issue for me with the young mids as at u18s both states and TAC no one runs hard tags so you have no idea how they cope under real and sustained pressure.

I wish Josh Battle well but the market (all clubs) passed him over.

Not sure he's the next Mumford, he looks more like Minson. Still, Minson played 190 AFL games and did make AA one season. Solid but unspectacular.

Well I for one love that we picked up Mr Darcy as he is the first player we have selected based solely on footballing ability and not on athletic ability for the last 5 years.

The club said ¨get a ruckman¨ the recruiters went and found in their words ¨the best tap ruck available¨ and said who cares if the kid is a little chunky, the can play football.

The game is about more than beep test scores and repeat sprint times.
