TOPIC: First pick Griffin Logue

Bizkit Based on that theory of first and 2nd round picks are the only ones with value.. how does that fair when you look at walters and neale just to name a couple..

Even now, GWS have been offloading a number of top 10 and first round picks who are yet to debut let alone hold down a regular spot,

I think a more standard fit for that pick 7 at what was available would’ve been Will Brodie, but while Logue was probably taken at the upper reaches of his draft range (at the moment) he’s not a totally outrageous pick there.

And I do kind of like the idea of players who come in from the clouds, as it shows that as they’ve hit a key stage of their development that they’re improving exponentially and as generally there’s still a heap of development left in them there’s no reason to think that the exponential trajectory won’t continue.

As for the merits of the trade deal. While it was optimistic thinking McCarthy could get across for a 3rd rounder, GWS were in no mind to have that happen and they still had plenty of hand in that deal. The minimum that would’ve got them to the table is an early second rounder. Also bearing in mind that the club went into the trade period committed to getting Stephen’s brother home and in all likelihood committed to bringing Hamling back too.

So what they did is trade down four places, which meant they missed out on one potentially better player (potentially), whereas they opted for a more moneyball-like situation gaining multiple players who could provide attributes we were short of.

One thing they could’ve tried for is to leverage GWS to screw Carlton for the #5 in the Marchbank/Pickett deal and trade back to there for #3. But that would’ve been complicated and put those other deals at jeopardy.

The top pick midfielders were obvious choices who would have merely been competing with Weller, Tucker and Balic and may not be any better. They have also already reached the upper level of their development. In spite of his apparent ability Logue is something of a novice with the potential to develop much more than the mid fielders. There's real blue sky there. For once a shrewd rather than obvious recruiting decision.

What we can't know is where Logue, SPS, & McBaggage sat on Freo's draft board. Teams don't follow the media's group-think draft order, they have their own estimations. That's how Fyfe can slip to pick 20odd.
So Freo might have rated Logue as number 1 on their board (giving shocking disregard to Bizkit's evaluation), in which case the trade period was monumental because they got their first choice and all the other pieces for free.
FWIW that's my guess of what happened. We took Logue at the top of his draft range so clearly we wanted him and not other highly rated players, and we didn't choose to drop down further and risk missing him.
But without knowing the Freo list I'm just guessing.

It would appear that Rossco is returning to plan A - strong attacking backline and midfield with a forward line that is unproven but looks OK to kick goals. He's also picked draftees that can step up immediately and have played at the next level down (WAFL/SANFL).

Backs: Dawson, A. Pearce, Johnson, Collins, Spurr, Ibbotson, Logue, Cox, Hughes, Crozier
Utilities/Backs: Mundy, S. Hill, Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Langdon, D. Pearce, Suban
Mids: Fyfe, Neale, Blakely, B. Hill, Weller, Tucker, Balic, Ryan, Bennell
Small Fwds: Walters, Ballantyne
Fwds: Yarran, Apeness, Taberner, McCarthy
Rucks: Sandilands, Clarke, Griffin, Darcy

Looks an OK team to me.

If you go with the theory that if your bottom 6 is the best in the comp you will do well, then freo are looking ok

ROTV I like your emphasis on the word potentially , all the hype in the AwFL world doesn't mean that SPS, McLuggage or anyone else will actually be a better player than Logue 5 years down the track, so to say unequivically that our recruiters have got it wrong is very harsh indeed.

We already have some excellent young mids at the club ,in Balic, Weller ,Langdon and Blakely i also believe Tucker will run through there at times as he matures , So the more i think about it the more i think we have made the best choice for the future of the club

I never spoke about the players picked in the third round and lower, I was talking about the value of those picks at the trade table. They mean very little to most clubs and are swapped easily.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I have to agree 353. We have such quality through the midfield that what we needed was reinforcement in those areas of weakness. I believe the club knows there is no ceiling to Blakely, Langdon and Weller, and I agree. Balic and Tucker are the unknown quantity, but the evidence has been thus far, very good. Players who need to excel soon include Ethan Hughes and Matt Taberner. I reckon they are up for it.

If Logue plays more tham one season in the bigs he will have to be considered a success compared to most of our recent first round picks.

Yep, it looks like the club is backing in the existing group of young midfielders. That is good to see as that has been the main thrust of draftingfor the last 5 years.
