I prefer this pick to SPS.. I see it as slightly less risk.. Everything SPS does looks amazing so you can get seduced by that.. I reckon Griffin Logue will do all the extra's and have the mindset to become his best self.. He has an elite rowing background so pre-season training will be a walk in the park... I will back in the BOOF

Bizkit - I'm interested to hear what SPECIFICALLY you would have done with the picks. It is easy to say we could have got player a, b or c and in 3 years time point to player b's success.

This was the trade for McCarthy:
The deal is effectively a slide of pick three to seven for Fremantle in return for the talented key forward plus a second and fourth round pick in the draft on 25 November.

I agree that we could have effectively got McCarthy for next to nothing, say by trading a pick around the 40's or 50's.

So you are competing against this as the scenario we ended up with:
- Logue
- An extra 2nd rounder - traded but for arguements sake lets say it was for our ruckman Darcy
- The extra 4th round pick that we picked up - Kersten (I think)

So who would you have picked?

The thing i like most about Griffin is his determination. So often you see drafts never reach their predicted potential because they get complacent. This guys got the attitude that will see him continue to get better and now a club that will push him to get there.

the trade was pick 3 for pick 7 (Logue), Pick 35 (traded for Hamling) & Cam Mac. plus a pick in 70s we didn't use.

I can see that losing McLuggage (taken at 3) may be seen to bite us in a few years time but IMHO we are a better team with those 3 instead of another (albeit very good) mid.

edit: I am assuming Zac D gets put out to pasture given our trading/drafting this year.

Just to make it clear once more, I like Logue and hope he'll be a good player for us. I assume the thinking regarding his role is as a running player similar to MJ early before attempting to transfer him into a Mundy but we'll see.

My answer Ricco would have been a pick around 50/60 for McCarthy (a third rounder) straight out then picking up McLuggage or SPS instead of Logue. I don't think Hamling is in our best backline and I have stated I wouldn't have given up a second round pick for him, he'd be in the same boat as McCarthy as a late pick in the third or fourth round.

In that scenario it becomes McLuggage/SPS for Logue. Swapping late picks doesn't mean a whole lot when there are 70 players taken, first and second round picks are what hold real value.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

I too would like you to go into more detail, Bizkit. I think you've been very vague and noncommittal in your opinions.

Saying sps or mcluggage gives you two shots. In 3 years you can turn around and say "I told you so" if 1 of them makes it. The recruiters get 1 shot.

They also have an extra shot at around 30ish as a result of the deal.

If we are fair in assessment in the future we need to ask is logue and the ruckman better than say sps

By the way, I think this is the problem when we assess draft performance in hindsight. We look back and say we could have got x, y and z when the reality is you can only get 1 pick.

For the record I think freo did well in their strategy. They need a kpd, assessed that they could get the one they wanted at a lower pick, and got a bonus along the way

they were going to take Griffin Logue regardless 3 or 7 so the theory we missed out on Mcluggage is BS , Also Biz McCarthy was a first round pick 14 i think ,So after proving himself in his first season as being up to the level required he drops to a third or fourth rounder , I don't understand your logic

To be fair I say the two names at 3 because I would prefer SPS but I have no doubt Bond and the majority of recruiters would take McLuggage instead. I'm not hedging my bets, instead just saying either one would be a good pick up.

And here I was Shane, thinking I was holding back.

Actually I'd imagine your theory there Pav is BS.
