TOPIC: First pick Griffin Logue

If Jake Stringer (a pick 5) is The Package, then this guy is The Answer. You can just tell he's going to be a super star. He'll be captain after Fyfe.

Dare I say it with baited breath as no one has mentioned it but to me he has a lot of similarities to another young key back that was drafted out of the swans around ten years back in the high teens from memory with similar characteristics and quite raw ... that bloke is now arguably the best key defenders in the AFL and has been outstanding for the last 3 years .... Alex Rance anyone

If Griffin becomes the player Rance is I think we got the steal of the draft ....

So when the 'E' guy goes to sleep in the cheersquad and I see 'GO FR O' from the city end is it Hendrix or this bloke? I don't rate him that much (his combine results got him all the hype before the draft), but who knows? Initially I saw him in the twenties somewhere, but when Silvagni and Co took SP-S I took a digital holiday.

Sure, let's see how he goes - with Hughes, Connor and Mikey it's always good having another Black Duck in the side. But taking a defender from the worst defensive team in the WAFL doesn't really conjure up comparisons to Pav or Elvis for me - I hated missing SP-S, really sour over that one...

Hodor was a great choice though - I say beef him up even more and let's start doing some real damage in the centre square. He even looks like Hodor.

You can't look at the McCarthy trade in isolation.

Sure, we could have played hard ball, whittled down days of negotiation until GWS finally caved, and they probably would have.

But we proved in that one trade that we were willing to give up something of value to get something of value - and that Freo were a club that other clubs could deal with. I'd suggest that the goodwill generated would have followed us throughout the trade period, as evidenced by how quickly the other trades were done.

They also could have rationally refused a bad trade on the basis that it would send a signal.

There's absolutely no chance the AFL were letting GWS reject McCarthy's request for a trade to Freo a second time and force him to sit out another year of football due to his mental battles. Good will doesn't mean much of anything at the trade table either.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Maybe don't call it goodwill. Let's say that the McCarthy trade let other clubs recognise that Fremantle we're willing to settle for a good trade, rather than expend time and effort to get the best possible trade.

And that recognising that, opposition clubs were more likely to entertain possible trades they might not have considered otherwise.

Remember the pub scene from A Beautiful Mind?

I'm with prefect on this one...get a key forward with great potential who bleeds purple, still keep a top 10 pick which we use to draft a key back with great potential (who will also bleed purple), as well as establish a good working relationship with a club who will soon succumb to salary cap pressures and have to offload a buttload of top talent in the not too distant future...win win win. Sure you can hold out, put the Giants in a vice and force their hand to accept peanuts for their still contracted player, but you become the a**hole that nobody wants to deal with in the future. That's cutting off your nose to spite your face. I rate the whole trade period a complete success on the part of the Freo recruiters and can't wait to see all of these players pull on the purple in 2017.
