Dockerlanders with a legal background can help educate me here, but is it normal for defendants in a case to be in "intense negotiations" with prosecutors regarding the charges laid against them? Isn't that like an umpire asking an opposition player whether he should have awarded a free kick?

The more these scandals keep popping up, the more I feel there's a need for a truly independent body to adjudicate in these kind of matters. A group with no links to the football fraternity and all the complex loyalties tied up in that.

Patrick Smith has a good article on the back page of today's (15 Nov) Australian newspaper, which explains in some detail how clunky and unwieldy the doping code can be to apply, which is why there's room for such 'negotiations', although he also strongly hints that the AFL would have preferred to have kept the whole mess quiet, permanently.

The threat of two QCs doing battle at $2000 an hour each for a week - plus a few assistants, at a lower rate - makes people search for negotiated solutions. In the clash of legal principle and economic reality...

Plus the bad publicity for everyone and the time it takes.

Dodging a potential drug test. There wasn't ever going to be a drug test.

If there was no drug tester arriving at the door to do a test and Lachie wasn't home, how did all of this come out? Haven't seen these kind of details in the media.

I'm up for those dodgy GWS upper echelon who let this happen causing them to lose a or some draft picks. Good for us all and they've had so many free picks it would serve them right.

His ex-girlfriend reported him, presumably because she was concerned for the integrity of the game.

Ok thanks Shane.

Has anyone asked why they thought he would fail a drug test if it was to happen?

I believe he had taken something illegal but non-performance enhancing but was scared that it may have contained something that would test positive as performance enhancing drug, similar to those two Collingwood players. He told Graham Allan about it and Allan told him he should go and stay at Craig Lambert's house so, should the drug testers come calling, they wouldn't be able to find him.

He made a lot of mistakes but even at 19 he should know that you don't trust someone with two first names.

Prefect, if I remember rightly the AwFL have been there, when the ump asked Matty Carrs opponent whether Matty should take the point he kicked or opt for a free kick on goal after that push in the back as Matty kicked.

Hahahahahaha I remember that game well, I had to do a pinch test on myself and walk outside to touch some real things like trees and rocks just to make sure I was awake. Then the fury of realization set in at that point and I needed several beer daiquiris to calm my anger.

Whifield's girlfriend contacted the club over concerns for his welfare due to allegedly consuming illicit drugs.

Also allegedly, Gubby told the club welfare officer to delete those texts.

Whitfield was then 'hidden' away in case he was tested and he apparently sent a text saying he was avoiding any testers. The stupid thing is he wasn't listed to be tested so he could have just stayed at home.

Then the 'crazy ex-girlfriend' defence came out but that collapsed when it was shown she was out of the country at the time. Then it got changed to Whitfield having a migraine. Now apparently, if he only gets a 6 month ban he'll plead guilty.

Gubby also threatened to fight any sanctions but according to the Age, will plead guilty as he expected to win at AFL but would almost certainly lose at CAS. Which says a lot.

Still waiting to hear ASADA's response as 'intent to avoid a drug test' is the same as a failed drug test...so 4 year ban.
