I was only 9 when I first became a Freo member with pocket money saved up over the course of a year. My old man who is a die hard Bomber's fan and played some footy for them refused to buy me a Freo membership but I managed to convince him to come with me to games if I paid my own way. 1997 was the first year I could afford my own membership and so we went to the footy every second week and we were at the game Leach kicked that goal after the siren.

I don't remember if it was as a result of that kick or because I enjoyed his runs down the wing well before that game but Leach was up there as my favourite player along with Dale Kickett and Winston Abraham. I was ecstatic and erupted when he kicked it despite being on the opposite side of the ground and spent many an arvo in the backyard afterwards kicking goals over my brothers and pretending to be Quentin lining up for goal.

It was also the first time my old man cheered for a Freo win and got a bit excited and loud about the Dockers. He still claims to be a Bomber at heart and maintains an Essendon membership from WA but Leach's goal made him a Dockers fan and convinced him to get me Freo memberships for christmas the next few years.

I wish Quentin all the best with the battles he faces and I hope he's able to overcome them and enjoy many more moments at the footy with his kids like he gave me and my old man.

Even Stage 3 testicular cancer has a pretty good treatment and recovery rate, but no one wants to be part of even the good cancer stats. Good luck to him.
