The likes of fyfe and neale have put in some hard, long summers of pre-season training and now notably are both elite players. Zac Clarke could certainly take a leaf out of their books - especially if these types of players are demanding high paying contracts over 3+ years.

Holidays for a 20 something year old - is partying, late nights, backpacking etc. All far away from the measures of an extensive rehab program. Work life balance is important - but not at the cost of limiting your career to a sub par afl player.

That's nonsense. He's entitled to the same holiday period as every other AFL player.

He's not the property of the football club. If you let them, they'd force everyone to be in "rehab" from October to March.

From what I am reading today, you're not confusing AFL with NRL there Shane are you or have I confused my "rehabs"?

Hendrix has gone through as tough a year as anyone and has every right to head overseas on a holiday. He's a professional footballer who deserves a break and no doubt has rehab plans while away and restrictions on what he can and can't do. Suggesting he's done anything wrong by going on holiday with the other 40 members of the squad is ridiculous.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Partying in off seasons probably shortened Dane Swan's life expectancy but didn't stop him winning Brownlow and premiership medals.

Might have to get the Fair Work Ombudsman to have a look into this.....

I am not at all suggesting he is doing anything wrong by travelling away. What I am suggesting is maybe it could be a good idea to put down the frequent flyer card for one pre-season, and commit to a summer program which would enable him to step up into freo's number 1 ruck position as opposed to peel's.

If it was that big a concern, they shouldn't have played him in the WAFL finals.

If they showed a real duty of care, he would have had the operation the week after the week 1 loss to the bulldogs, then he could have been playing again by mid season instead of dragging himself out week after week and playing under duress.

PK, if he had the op after R1, he would have been out for 2 weeks. According to the injury lists anyway.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Anyone who thinks AFL players don't need a proper break after training (with all it incorporates) and playing from November to September is kidding themselves.

Zac Clarke has since he arrived at our Club been burdened with amazing expectations. In the main he hasn't lived up to them BUT we need to assess as to why.
Others have mentioned injury, certainly has had a few
Others that he is lazy, subjective at the best and I seem to remember a bloke playing off the half back line with blonde (became a captain I think) as being extremely lazy and lacked pace
Perhaps being compared every week to the BEST ruckman in the last decade and not being able to measure up
Perhaps living in a revolting door called the "selection panel"
At his best I BELIEVE in him - he has REAL talent and PERHAPS, just perhaps if some strident critics viewed him a little more positively he might think he is valued
Give him game time, I suggest 10 games in a row, coach him so that Sandi goes forward for at least 40% of a game (and the specialist coaches teach him to hold marks) and then lets see what result we get.
He can, and will with the proper support from both the coaches(???) and the supporters give us another 6-8 years quality football

Hooperman, in a way, you have described a failure of the Freo system to support and develop this particular player to maximise his potential. However, he has been on Freo's list for long enough to be able to understand his role in the team game, and to have observed of what is required when it comes to training, preparation, and playing his part.
I am surprised that you mention that you want the specialist coaches to teach him how to hold a mark. I would be astonished if that has not been part of most day-to-day training drills for all players.
At his best, Zac can still be a really great contributor in Freo's best 22. On the basis of last year's effort that I observed, I must say I remain to be convinced.
Clearly, the Club hierarchy see good reason to have offered a year's extension to his contract. But Zac must know that he has 12 months to repay the faith that has been shown to him; the success or failure he has this coming year is completely in his court.
