TOPIC: Zac Clarke

Zac Clarke has not yet signed with Freo. It seems strange that for the last couple of weeks, his signature on a new 3 year (???????) deal was "imminent", but as yet, not even a peep from FFC HQ or Clarke's management.

The way he played up until Peel's finalk series was really ordinary, so I initially was not fussed if he was traded or kept.
His effort for Peel during their finals was good, BUT...still no contract.
Has anyone heard any whispers?

I thought the club announcement on Silvagni was that he was the last of the delistings.

What happens if he choses not to sign that three year deal we have offered him? Do we still qualify for a compensation pick if he goes somewhere else? He really shouldn't be a delisted free agent because we haven't de-listed him right?.. Or can he just de-list himself and head to the pre-season draft? Doesn't really seem fair on us seeing we have spent years developing him..

Can someone please explain??

Damn shame we could get a good trade for The Fro. Just hope we see his potential one day very soon. Been a long long wait...

My understanding is that Freo need to put through their next "list disclosure" by Monday, so yes, Clarke could walk if he is not contracted. I believe player contracts end 31st October, so if he is unsigned, then...
The following is from Gestapo Propaganda HQ (AFL website)
Delisted players become free agents and can join new clubs during any of the three NAB AFL delisted player free agency windows.

Once clubs have delisted a player, they will receive no compensation should that player be signed by a new club.

The key dates for delisted free agents are as follows:

Tuesday November 1 - NAB AFL delisted player free agency period (1) begins

Tuesday November 8 - NAB AFL delisted player free agency period (1) closes

Thursday November 10 - NAB AFL delisted player free agency period (2) begins

Friday November 18 - NAB AFL delisted player free agency period (2) closes

Saturday November 26 - NAB AFL delisted player free agency period (3) begins

Sunday November 27, 2pm - NAB AFL delisted player free agency period (3) closes

Monday November 30, 2pm - Final AFL club list lodgement

Delisted players can also nominate for the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft.

So any unrestricted free agent can just decide to wait to this period and de-list themselves? Then he becomes a delisted free agent and can go anywhere.. Surely every new club that the player wants to go to asks the player to do this.. What if a delisted free agent signs a five year deal? Seems like non-sense

Unless he has made a secret deal with another team that even Hackdorn can't fabricate or make public, I'm guessing he's going to re-sign. He wouldn't want to end up in the same boat as Ted Richards.

Detox, it seems to me a player can't delist himself.

Do you reckon Clarke is waiting to see if Freo pick up some ruckmen, which will determine where he sits in the pecking order. Sandi is a monty to be first ruck, it looks like the Ape will be second ruck changing out of the forward line and there is still Griff as the other secondary/ back-up ruckman. Clarke will not want to run around all season for Peel waiting for someone to get injured, so after the National Draft if we picked up a young ruckman, could Clarke if still unsigned nominate for the rookie or pre-season draft?
I reckon Sandi has two seasons left in him at least, Griff maybe three, Apeness if he comes good has ten ahead of him and Clarke at least five. If we get another young ruckman in the National draft and a seasoned campaigner in the rookie or PSD that's six ruckmen in the team and I reckon that's too many.

I reckon both parties know that Freo needs Clarke. Clarke's agent would be pushing for very favourable terms (either salary, years, or both), and Freo would be resisting. The question is, does Clarke need Freo? I don't know what the interest would be from other clubs, but you'd suggest at least one of the 17 other clubs could find a use for him, especially if they can get him for nothing.

My guess is that it's a game of chicken between Clarke's agent and Bond / Lloyd, and that eventually Freo will blink - because he's more important to us than we are to him.

Ok Sticking the head well and truly above the trench in sniper territory but what if Freo called Clarkes bluff and went after Darcy Cameron or Will Minson as replacements?
Cameron is still young and looks to have developed since being at Claremont and Minson is 31 which is still relatively young for a ruckman, he could probably play for two or three seasons on our list. Both would be low cost options freeing a bit more cash to sling at players we want to keep on our list next year (like Fyfe and Langdon). Thoughts?

Surely, Freo has offered Clarke a contract reflecting his true abilities/state of his knees ... and it is so paltry that Zachary is checking other options.
