TOPIC: Fixture Shenanigans

Nope - anything can happen and I would hate to see that Other Mob fluke their way into a GF (like 2006). Gill stated this morning he would like to see all 18 teams finish the season on 11 and 11 - teams that try, not some corporate idiots that put the cue in the rack when Fyfe gets injured.

What's the matter with a professional team, full of professional footballers actually trying to play a full season for a change. We - that is, we the Fremantle supporters - haven't had a full season of games since RoLy arrived. Let's be like Footscray in 2016 for a change and try our hearts out week in/week out, get to the Big One and win it.If we've got a game in Tassie, Darwin, Cairns or wherever, let's send our best squad to win the bloody thing - no more mamby-pamby sly strategy save the best for later baloney - let's go down to Kardinia Park and beat the Cats (instead of whining about not being in Melbourne).

I hate byes, I hate new math formulations of a football season, corporate think tanks made up of morons - and State of Origin is now a Qld/NSW thing.

The Bulldogs were on the plane back to Melbourne at three quarter time in Round 23.

Whilst we are talking about the fixtures, I remembered a discussion that comes up every July/August and how we could devise a better fixture model to make the competition fair. Stay with me here.
The playoffs are an area of extreme bias towards Victorian based clubs. If a Victorian team qualifies for a playoff game as the away team, it has a 50-50 chance of playing in Melbourne. All the non-Vic teams have a 1 in 17 chance of playing in their home state – what a huge disparity!. If non-Victorian wants to get to the GF, they need to finish 1-2 or at worst 3-4 and it all comes down to home advantage and travelling.
So the solution is
create two divisions – the Victorian Division and the National division – 9 teams in each (with a Victorian team taking an annual turn being in the National division). The season would have 25 home and away games - getting rid of the NAB cup. 8 games will be played against teams in the same division (home and away) and 9 games against the other division. Qualification for the finals would be by division, with the top4 in each division making up the 8. The blockbusters remain, even enhanced with more Vic rivalry games and we get to see Colliingwood only once every two years! The playoff race is probably alive for 11-12 teams rather than the top8 being decided by week 6.
For the finals there would be no advantage to a Victorian club over a non-Victorian club. The inequality of travel would be gone.
There is not even a chance that Eddie and Co would consider this ..way too radical, but I bet Gerald Whateley and other thinkers of the AFL game would give it consideration.
All in favour ?

How about we just flick 3 Victorian teams and Brisbane and make a draw from there. Never happen but all the remaining teams would be of a much higher standard and I would suggest more good games.

Just get the solvent non-Victorian teams and then invite a few Vic teams, and have a 12 team comp where everyone plays everyone twice. Bottom two teams get relegated to the VFL each year to keep interest at both ends of the ladder.

Call it World Series Football.

The problem with divisions is that we get stuck with all the rubbish clubs.

You just need to de register Melbourne and works things out from there. You need to keep Richmond around for the comedy value.

With the proposed 17-5 model, it'd mean we wouldn't necessarily get the chance to flog the Eagles twice in a year. And, some years we wouldn't get a home derby. Step too far I think....

I like the 5-17 model better. Get all the double ups out the way in first 5 weeks based on where u finished previous season. Then just play everyone once.

Would even up the comp with the bottom sides been able to win early season games.
Easy

You lost me when you called Gerald Whateley a thinker. Fine up till then.

The problem with splitting the comp into interstate and Vic divisions is the amount of travel involved (every second week v none), not to mention the final dance is still in Melbourne.

Just had time to check the fixtures and it looks pretty crap don't it. Not sure how half our games are against top 8 teams - there was only 8 of them after all. Given that there are 10 bottom teams, of whom we were one how does this actually equate?
I know no one hears knows the actual answer, but it does seem utterly perplexing.

From what I can gather Freo and GC are the only teams that play two bottom 6 teams twice, the rest play 3. All the bottom 6 only have to play one top 6 side twice. That is not much difference.

Remember this time last year when other teams were going - Oh no! We have to play Fremantle twice.
