I know the club economics of this don't add up but I tend to think he's got this arse about. Supporters know when their season is over, they're not going to start getting excited about hollow wins against other losers. and Football clubs are full of stocky men with tiny hands who believe in self preservation about all else. They're not going to put on show in the last 5 rounds, they're going to send everyone for operations and make sure that the last 5 rounds are torture for everyone left standing.

Scratch the needle accross the record and send a big hook out to remove the bottom 6 teams for the last month, and just play a longer finals series with those still standing. Everyone can have their operations or go on holidays early and they can get back to do a longer pre-season.

Then take the extra money from the jacked up ticket prices and compensate the clubs that had to cut their seasons short.

Spot on Shane.

I have given this some thought relatively recently.

There are 18 teams.

So, without many of the finer details being thought thru, what about something akin to this:

Each team plays each other once, swapping grounds every year. That's 17 rounds.

Throw in your State team v State Team double ups, with some traditional Victorian rivalries for a State Pride Round, now we are upto 18 rounds.

Throw in a traditional rivals round to allow for traditional fixtures such as Queens Bday, Anzac Day, Good Friday games etc and we are upto 19 rounds.

These rounds are not necessarily played in the order above, and as said there would be some finer details to be sorted.

This means that Round 20 could be structured so that the teams that occupy 17th and 18th spot coming into Rd 20 play off for Pick 1 (winner gets pick 1, loser gets pick 2 - no more, or at least reduced, tanking), and that is there last game of the season.

After 20 rounds you are now left with 16 teams and 2 less games than a normal H&A season. So simply use these two last rounds to somehow turn these 16 remaining teams into a final eight after 22 games. This should be structured so that over these final two rounds, bottom eight teams play bottom eight teams and top eight teams play top eight teams. This would create higher quality games. If you are in the eight after round 20 you need to beat two other top eight teams to be assured of staying there - this would create a final top eight that deserves to be there, similarly if you are just out of the eight you have two chances against equally-ish matched teams to get there. This scenario may have resulted in North being out of 2016's finals and Melbourne or the Saints being in there - creating much better quality finals games. It would also prevent the top 8 being finalised and unchanged from Rd 6 as was the case in 2016.

Just a thought !

You would intersperse those five games amongst the 17.

Which essentially should be the starting point in developing fixtures now.

But any time the word model is used I get on board.

I posted this on a Facebook thread earlier:

How's about play everyone once - last season's home games becoming this season's aways - then have a bye week during which they draw the next round of fixtures - 1 against a top 3 team, 1 against a 4-6th team, 1 against a 7-9th, 1 against a 10- 12th, 1 against 13th - 15th and 1 against 16th - 18th. make the pre-season shorter to accomodate the 23rd fixture. Then you could have a parallel finals series for the bottom 8 where the winner earns the No 1 draft pick, runner up No 2 etc. 2nd local derby guaranteed in 2nd round of fixtures, tanking issues solved, no easier fixture list for anyone, blockbuster fixtures still accomodated.

I don't want to see the bottom 8 teams playing off for anything. It's sad and I'd be embarrassed for them.

Easy, cancel foxtel and/or switch off the telli for those games. At what point did you stop attending/watching Freo games in 2016?

That's the thing about those last 5 games of the season. In 2015 you just wanted the finals to start. In 2016 you just wanted it all to end.

The only thing I can think of that would have made August a more depressing month of football would have been losing a play off for draft picks to Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

R5. That's about the time they stopped attending too.

State games won't work. AFL players would rather have a week off to recover and their coaches won't let them play. Do an ACL in a state game? I think not.

Nothing I've seen or heard comes close to what we already have. (sadly)

Sorry Jimbo, by State v State games, I mean us v them, port v Adelaide, swans v giants, lions v suns.

I hear ya Shane, but with any ladder based sporting comp, there are always going to be teams that can't play finals with some rounds left before the end of the season, and that is regardless of the number of rounds in a season. By your logic, we could end up with Rd 1, finals, GF. After a year (well, a month, I guess) of that, campaigning to scrap rd 1 would start. Although, ending the season in mid-april may quash the Good Friday debate.

I was thinking more of a play everyone once and then have a top 10 but I like the sound of this 20 weeks of finals idea.

Finals Round 1
1 plays 18, 2 plays 17, 3 plays 16...

Finals Round 2
The winner of game 1 plays the loser of game 7, if the winner of game 6 was the higher finishing team...

At the beginning of the season there's a draw of ping pong balls resulting in three groups of 6 teams. You play the other 5 teams in your group twice, the other 12 teams once.
No 'blockbusters', 'traditional rivals' rubbish, just a blind draw that treats all teams equally.
You'll get harder draws some years, easier draws other years, but at least it will be on a random basis.

The idea has merit but I don't think it would be worth the effort of having to try and write Greater Western Sydney Giants on a ping pong ball.
